Industrial and personal litter, including discarded jugs of urine, become N.D. Oil Patch problem
March 26, 2012 at 3:08 am in Grand Forks Herald
Officials: Lack of rest stops, lack of respect both contributeLitter has become an escalating problem as the rush to tap vast caches of crude escalates in North Dakota. As the number of trucks coming to the oil mecca increases, so does the trash. Some of the industrial rubbish blows in from unsecured truckloads, but for many, the most frustrating trash is the gallons of discarded urine. Continue Reading

That’s what republicans call the smell of money folks.

This would be good work for those who are incarcerated in our county and city jails. Sheriff Joe from AZ had the right idea.

Personally, I’d rather see corporatists like Berg, Dalrymple, Hoeven, Ness, etc. picking up the urine. Full time.

Why do my tax dollars go to pay for the roads these big trucks destroy. They can build pipelines-they can build roads too-just like the railroads. Think about how long our roads would last without those heavy trucks on them. What seems fair to me is paying for roads for my pickup not subsidizing these oil truckers. I say tax them high enough to fix the damage they do-otherwise it’s socialism right boys?? And don’t give me that crap about they already pay taxes-we all know they don’t pay their fair share for the damage they do. If I lived in that area I would be screaming at my representatives about this….

Are you kidding me?! A solution to this problem is to pay student groups to pick up bottles full of urine? Come on, I think we can come up with something better. Porta potties, perhaps? Have the corporations making oodles of money out West pay to get more rest stops constructed, quickly? Anything besides sending kids out to be exposed to human waste.

Why is this situation so surprising? ..Poor housing or not enough housing, overloaded public services, a sudden mass influx of workers looking for big money…I’ll bet an occasional bottle of urine isn’t the only disgusting thing being found!

ND by all accounts has buckets of money–maybe they could use some of it to help their people for a change. How about building a few rest stops? We can spend money to help people who live by a river without flood insurance why can’t we help people flooded with urine–at least there’s no insuance policy they could have purchased to help themselves.

No way! we have to save that for a rainy day, hence the name rainy day fund. I think that is also code for when the politicians want to build something we don’t need or want.

This is what poorly planned, explosive growth looks like. All the people clamoring for jobs and oil pipelines and natural gas fracking should look at these problems and then ask “Is this what I want my town/community to look like?” The problem is that so many of these corporations (and their employees and contractors) have no vested interest in the community and once they’re done extracting their resources they’ll leave. They’ll leave urine bottle littered highways, poisoned drinking water wells, uninhabitable land, and devastated towns. I’m all for growth and jobs, but let’s be smart about it and think things through. There should be plenty of lessons learned from this current oil boom.

Like write into any future contracts that the oil company has to put up a decent infrastructure to support the crews before any holes are drilled, any oil removed.

This is why we need people in charge who are not in bed with the oil industry. Elect some Democrats who have a history of making sure industry doesn’t run roughshod over the rights of North Dakota citizens. We need balance in our development. The oil’s not going anywhere. We need to be careful with our land rather than sell our way of life to the highest bidder.

Kathy I spend my summers in Williston. I can guarantee you no trucker is going to stop on those busy roads to try to find a Porta Potty. You could set up 10 every two miles and you would never have anyone stopping for fear of not being able to get back up on the road. You could try to build more rest stops but where are you going to put them? The sides of the roads are filled with man camps and rigs. I agree having kids pick them up is NOT the solution but neither is porta potties. This boom came too quick and too hard and now solutions seem few and far between.

Mandatory women drivers, their anatomy and soda bottles don’t match very well.

I wouldn’t think male or female anatomy would be all that compatible with soda bottles.
Just the idea of anyone trying to use one while driving scares me to death! Texting would most likely be far safer. And in a semi?
Guess that’s going to be the next “Buckleup” slogan? “Use Depends and save lives”.
