The reason measure 2 is on the ballot is because folks just can’t afford to have an additional $75 tacked on to their property tax. The median property tax in Griggs County, population 2420, is $731 per year for a home worth the median value of $53,300. Griggs County collects, on average, 1.37% of a property’s estimated fair market value as property tax. Griggs County has one of the highest median property tax rates in the United States.

Those same homes, if they were in Fargo, would be valued at $200.000+. Taxes would be 3 times what Cooperstown residents are paying now so, realy, it’s like comparing apples and oranges. Bottom line is that workers get as much as workers in Fargo get and living expenses are a third of what they are in Fargo. So quit complaining and take care of your courthouse. It’s history and it is priceless.
