According to a preliminary budget, Alexandria Public Schools faces a $2.1 million budget shortfall for fiscal year 2012-2013.
The district plans to start trimming non-personnel budget items things like textbooks, supplies, technology, summer school and activities and, in doing so, eliminate $780,000.
It’s a start, but there’s $1.3 million more to cut. Continue Reading

Totally irresponsible……I would think most of us pay our bills off before taking on more financial obligations. This is what really irritates me. Oh my we need a new school, have to have one now our kids need this! Then the reality sinks in oh my we can’t even afford the schools we do have. Makes one wonder when the District is going to ask for more money. There’s an old saying that still rings true, “Live within your means.”

How about cutting all the district employees that have no contact with, or direct impact on students.

Are they kidding us?!!!!! It was such a big deal to have this new school and now they need to cut funding by taking away the things the kids actually need to learn! TEXTBOOKS, really!!!! How are these kids supposed to learn without the textbooks. Maybe the board should have thought about all this before they decided we needed a new school so bad. Expecially one that has more auditoriums than actual classrooms. I mean, thats all I see when I look at the picture of what its supposed to look like. After about 5 years, they are going to say, “we need to add on, we don”t have enough classrooms.” How many more maistakes can you make and then say oops, before we, the taxpayers, say enough. Give me a break!

“Can’t be compared to Duluth”?
Well, I will give you that Alexandria has not had an NA tribe cut off funding to the city of Alex, but the state has chopped funding back.
And there was no reason that Alex needed a new high school, other than they ‘needed it’. Just like they ‘needed’ all those other ‘improvements’ over the last few years.
Well, I won’t argue that, but if they hadn’t twiddled thier thumbs over the last 30 years, they might not have ‘needed’ all this stuff at one time?

How much do you want to bet that district employees got pay raises over the last 2 years? The average PER TEACHER salary increase was around $2,000 per year in the current negotiations across Minnesota.
Schools would be able to survive the storm they’re in if they’d simply enact hard freezes on employee salaries.
Simple.
