The scandal of abuse of Iraqi detainees at Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad nearly a decade ago “was primarily due to failure of leadership,” said an officer who exerted leadership there shortly after the incidents. Too bad that this report didn’t say anything about Karpinski being demoted for reasons unrelated to Abu Ghraib. Her superiors made her the fall guy for what happened there. She essentially had no role in formulating interrogation policy nor in supervising interrogations. Instructions for torture came from the top so it’s not a suprise they needed someone to blame and she was it.
