Andy Peterson, Bismarck, column: Measure 2 supporters try to silence opposition
February 25, 2012 at 6:05 pm in Grand Forks Herald
Despite this heavy-handed attempt to bully our leaders into silence, Keep It Local North Dakota will continue to disseminate the truth about the severe damage Measure 2 would inflict upon our state. We hope the courts will settle this matter quickly so a forthright, respectful debate can occur. Continue Reading

I disagree with Andy. Yes if Measure 2 is passed the state could choose to not raise any other taxes. As of the close of fiscal year 2011 the State’s governmental funds reported combined ending fund balances of $5 billion, an increase of $1.2 billion (bbuz.biz) If it is not “sound” policy, I prefer the sound of not having my house used to get me to comply with unsustainable property taxes. The debate has not been stifled, Andy just attended a debate in Williston on Thursday night. I expect our elected officials to listen to us when we tell them our property taxes are hurting our families. I do not believe it is being a bully when someone seeks legal remedy to resolve a conflict, a bully trys to scare people into complying like one of the Keep it Local members the ARRP of North Dakota instilling fear in our seniors by saying Meals on Wheels and senior centers will not be funded if Measure 2 passes. Where in the Measure did they find this? They didn’t it is not in there. Stop scaring Grandma! The property tax system already creates fear for seniors, because if they cannot produce enough income, the reality is they will be forced out of their home if they cannot pay their property tax. AARP should not be siding with their lobbying buddies, they should be siding with the seniors they are supposed to be representing. The longer a senior can stay in the home the better it is for them and for our communities. Why do you think the government has limited the number of nursing home beds? It is cost prohibitive to have everyone living in a government assisted institution. Vote Yes on Measure 2 M2is4U

AARP is no longer a friend to senior citizens. It’s outgrown it’s roots, and now simply joins the Corporate Culture in attacking We The People.
Measure 2 may be the best thing to happen to North Dakota–and perhaps the other 49 as well.

What makes filing suit important and necessary in this case is that when government bureaucrats and government-supported special interests distort and misrepresent the facts in order to make their “case” against an initiated measure, it is the power of government being directed against the people whom they govern. It should be very, very easy to see the problem with that. Such behavior is quite typical of totalitarian governments. That is why this action had to be taken. The actions that have been taken by certain government officials and representatives of government-subsidized entities clearly violate the Corrupt Practices Act.
