Illegal trash dumping increases
February 24, 2012 at 6:00 pm in Duluth News Tribune
While most people wouldn’t dream of dumping refuse along a road or in the woods in this day of environmental awareness, ditch and ravine dumping has always been a problem that ebbs and peaks. Minnesota conservation officers say we seem to be back on a peak.

Money to spend on trash is the big thing in hard times. Money of course being tight because “trickle down economics” stopped at the CEO pocket, along with bankers and Wall Street being bought out and paid off on the taxpayers buck, while taxes keep going up. Yeah I can see how you would blame it on a small group of those potesting. Are you Republican by chance? I`d bet you are. And afriad to use your real name besides! Go figure.

1. To relate this to Occupy movement people is ignorant; it has been going on much longer, as the article stated in the beginning.
2. Even if there were legal free ways to dump, these people would just go to the nearest ditch.
3. Thanks to those who work to clean it up, but it really irks me as a tapayeer who is also hurting financially to have to pay them for so many hours they should be doing other things.
4. The guilty people probably don’t read the paper so they won’t see what others think of them.

Yeah, I did goof on the spelling, but I`m sure you got my point. To blame all the trash out there on the protesters is as dumb as it gets, and a poor attempt at putting a political football to it. That`s why I made the comment I did…but yeah, I now see I was correct in my assessment of you. But at least your screen name fits. Afrad to be discovered are you?

Where exactly did I blame all the trash dumped out in the country on occupy protesters? On the other hand, can you show me evidence that it wasn’t? The people dumping this garbage live like hogs so Occupy protesters just naturally came to mind.

I call myself Greasy Ken because I had a friend that I worked construction with in Seattle that everybody called Greasy Ken and I thought it was a neat name. He was always packing heat, though not a criminal, and was a no nonsense kind of guy.

Is that a snickers wrapper I see there? I can’t tell for sure.

Instead of throwing it on the ground, and adding to your “Greasy Ken” image, why not pick it up and put it in the trash can, instead of waiting for someone else to do it for you. Typical………

If I had thrown it on the ground I’d surely have known what kind of candy bar it was. There was evidence in a picture for an Occupy story though where the was a bag of Snickers on the table in front of them, so I just put two and two together. Pretty good detective work on my part, huh. I’m glad to see you’re slowly coming around though, wanting those freeloaders to pick up after themselves.

To those few who think they’re getting away with something, you should know that in our neighborhood, we also look through your trash for names or other identifying items before we call the city. Don’t be surprised to find your garbage back on your own front lawn because you thought it was clever to unload it in our back yard. If you’re stopped in a place you shouldn’t be, we’ll ask who you are and what you’re doing. We take your license plate down, along with the date and time. And if the City of Duluth has some suggestions on how to catch you or prevent you from dumping, we’re all ears and happy to help.

Seems to me that the penalties for this piggish behavior are way too lenient. This is deliberate antisocial behavior with large clean up costs and should be punishable with heavy fines and jail time.

How about a slot on a local news program with video of the perps having to pick up the trash? Names provided.

There’s no excuse for disrespectful dumping. However, governments could reduce the temptation by maintaining longer and more convenient hours at transfer stations, recycle points, and landfills. A cost analysis would likely show it’s more cost effective to increase the percent of legal dumping by making it more convenient for users than to clean up after and track down violators.
