Bachmann pledges to continue work on new bridge
February 22, 2012 at 5:45 am in Hudson Star-Observer
U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann says he will continue efforts to build a new bridge linking Minnesota and Wisconsin even though newly drawn congressional districts mean she no longer represents the area where the bridge would be built. Continue Reading

I know Rep. Betty McCollum has been on the record saying the bridge is too expensive to build and favors a smaller, scaled down project. I wish she was more fiscally conservative when it came to voting for the Stimulus package, Health Care and eveything else Obama put in front of her. Just think of the Solyndra 500 million that went down a rat hole or worse. Here we have a bridge that you can see, touch and feel that will benefit millions of people over its lifetime and now its time to watch the purse.

The proposed bridge is too big and expensive. They should have torn down the old lift bridge and replaced it decades ago at a tenth of the cost. $800 million to fix Stillwater’s traffic problem is a bit much.
Funny how conservatives aren’t conservative when it’s for something they want.

“bridge is too big and expensive”
Isn’t functional (not aesthetic) bridge design a matter of current traffic volume and load and forecasted future demand? That is, engineering requirments for current needs + best future volume/load guess.
Expense: the base expense is again a function of engineering requirements + additional needed features (pedestrian/bike sidewalk) calculated based on market price of material + labor + regulatory costs. “Too” expensive are the things added above functionality- the aesthetic look.
“They should have torn down …and replaced it decades ago…”
Umm, “they” have been trying to replace it for decades. “Should have” means the time is long past to actually doing something.
“Funny how conservatives aren’t conservative when it’s for something they want.”
Replacing a deteriorated, undersized bridge is no more a “want” than replacing the I-35W bridge after it collapsed. Please re-examine your “want” and “need” methodology.

I agree with the first part of the rebuttal from the writer above. When I was 15 years old in 1973 I rode my bike past the Wisconsin side of the bridge equation. The State of Wisconsin had just bought the land for the ‘new’ bridge. There has always been resistance to the project and now 39 Years later, Yes, 39 years later, the same people are still fighting against it. This could have been solved many, many, many years ago at a fra tion of the cost. I am for a new bridge of any size, i wanted to point out the hypocrisy of the same people that usually spend taxpayer money hand over fist and then have a ‘too expensive’ attitude either for show or for their envroinmentalist backers. I just wish she would have had the same attitude when it came to the stimulus, cash for clunkers, National Health Care and all the other expensive things that truly affect us all.

They do vote for some real winners over there- Ventura, Franken, Governor google-eyes… I grew up in Stillwater and have heard the same BS for 40 years. If they promised to make it a light-rail ready bridge they would start construction tomorrow

two-faced outlook
no point
doesn’t understand
not liking a behavior
also means
you can love the unknown individual
enough
to pray for him/her
and ask the Lord
to shower that person with
love and blessings.
need to undestand:
God said, hate the sin (behavior)
love the sinner (individual)
