How hard can it be to have someone from the arena over see what is being said at these games? Kick them out when it happens. Parade them out in front of everybody in attendance. Embarrass them a little bit. That will get their attention. What good does a letter do?

Hold on now, I thought the nickname and logo wasn’t offensive? I guess UND fans can throw gophers onto the ice and say NDSUcks and all kinds of banter. But opponents of UND have got to watch their p’s and q’s or they might be considered offensive. Nice gig if you can get it I guess.

Wow.
You finally figured it out.
The nickname and logo are not offensive, the PEOPLE are offensive.
By your logic we should ban handguns and rifles, so no one would ever be harmed. Except for in Rwanda, where they used machetes. Although, I suppose you could ban machetes. Except for on the Mexican/American border where they use rocks. Although, I suppose you could ban rocks. Except for someone like the Boston Strangler, he used rope to kill his victims. Although, I suppose you could ban rope.
The name and logo can not be offensive, human perception makes it what it is.
So happy you finally figured it out. See, this has all been worth the effort.

Not an accurate comparison I’m afraid, racist chants are racist chants, SU Sucks is not a racist chant – small pox blankets is.
Somewhat related how soon until the UND students figure out that “Best Buy” is a great chant when playing su – perhaps that won’t be happening much in the future as it has been proven they will do anything to avoid losing to UND – even break up a successful conference and try and flee to another division.

Why does UND get a free pass on everything? Some of the most offensive chants I have heard, come from the UND student section.

oldtimer: There are none so blind as those who will not see. In my little town, I hear fans complaining about the neighboring town’s football fans. When you stand on our sidelines, we have people screaming at the refs and, at times, our own coaches. We’re pathetic and don’t even know it. UND is no better than anywhere else and probably is not claiming so. If the nickname was a horse or a badger, etc., we wouldn’t be having a conversation. The white majority of ND is incapable of objectively wrapping around this issue. I don’t call it racist. It’s insensitive and ignorant, but human nature. Thanks to the NCAA, this will be over soon.

So, when Belcourt plays a game, anyone who opposes the “Braves” is a racist?
Are the people who holler “Irish suck” ….. are they racist?
Maybe it is time for students and adults that attend athletic events to show some respect for the other team, no matter what they are named.
Guns don’t kill people, people kill people. Same argument. You think you can change peoples behavior by eliminating inanimate objects.
That does not work.
A loud mouthed boorish slob will be a loud mouthed boorish slob, no matter how many names you change.

The solution is to hold people responsible for their actions.
But in a society where there is an explosion of autism, at least an explosion in the diagnosis of autism, holding people accountable will be a difficult process.

I’m not sure anyone is looking for a solution. We’ve set the bar so low on fan behavior, the best we can probably hope is that the rudeness & drunken violence doesn’t spill into the parking lot. Sometimes that’s even asking too much. Duluth is in the news, but probably is doing more than most to keep things civil. I was suggesting a need for self-examination and little need for enforcement. Hockey fans seem to be measured differently than other sports fans.
