A ‘no’ — for now — to no smoking in Cottage Grove parks

The Cottage Grove City Council passed on a proposal Wednesday that would have snuffed out smoking in the city’s parks, with some council members saying they were uncomfortable with telling adults not to light up in outdoor public spaces. Continue Reading

I’d really appreciate more patrolling of cigarette butt littering – especially with this drought. Most of the parks are in residential areas, and I’m guessing residents in the area would not want to deal with grass fires.

I disagree with the council. The CGAA already prohibits smoking at ballfields when in use by teams, even though those are city parks. The intent was to make adults think twice before smoking in the parks. Second, in case you haven’t noticed, the city parks are where you find teenagers smoking as well. Good grief, it was acknowledged that they would be putting up a sign without the enforcement. But, at least it might make people think twice before smoking in front of kids. Studies show that kids who grow up in a smoking environment are much more likely to take up the habit than those that don’t. Here’s the kicker. New York City, yes, The Big Apple, banned smoking in its city parks. Why can’t CG?

I think they should ban people that use perfumes , colognes and scented deodorants too! and obese people wearing skimpy clothes in public. and people that grill hot dogs and hamburgers in the parks and people that have crying kids! and people with red hair and freckles and people that breathe too close to me.

Smoking in the open air at parks should be allowed, as long as the cigarette butts are disposed of properly! Big brother is being way too invasive into our lives! I’m not a smoker, but it is so over the top to regulate smoking in open parks. Open air stadiums also. What next? Farting in public? Second hand smell?
