GOP: Phase out business property tax

Bill receives widespread business support
ST. PAUL A Minnesota Republican tax priority is lowering and eventually eliminating a statewide property tax on businesses, but Democrats said they are funding the tax cut with money from poor, disabled and elderly renters. Continue Reading

Businesses do not run out and hire people because the government gave them a tax cut. New jobs are only created when the existing workforce can not keep up with demand.

I don’t have a problem with tax benefits for businesses that are ACTIVELY creating jobs. Local units of government give property tax breaks to job creators all the time. The City of Jackson and Jackson County recently reduced property taxes for AGCO because of their expansion and job creation. JOBZ was fairly successful in encouraging new business and new jobs through structured tax breaks. But to take money from the demand side in the form of increasing taxes on renters, and giving it to the supply side in the form of business property tax cuts and just hope that it will “create jobs” is a poor idea. Owners and investors will just pocket that money because there will be no reason to hire people and ramp up production because there will be no increase in demand for their product. Supply side economics got us into the recession, more of the same won’t get us out of it.

Can’t balance the state budget…but lets take in less tax revenue…that should help…why stop at just business…lets eliminate all property taxes

I totally agree with all the above comments. This GOP gimmick is further proof that they don’t know what they’re doing… that they have no plan. Another article in the Globe today talks about reducing Medical Assistance insurance support for the poor who have chronic illnesses (e.g. diabetes) which, experts agree, will just deprive them of help altogether or drive them to the already overburdened emergency rooms where they must receive help, with or without insurance. In other words, the GOP obviously continues to pander to the wealthy while taking away benefits from the poor through elimination of rent credits and M.A.
It’s time to vote these clowns out of office.

That article didn’t say anything about taking assistance from the poor! It said “legal noncitizens and undocumented people” Aka ‘illegal aliens’ the governments official name for these non-citizens. Why should our citizens ever have been paying for the healthcare of citizens of other countries anyway? It probably rates right up there as one of the reasons we are in dire straits in the first place. Anyway, the way it sounds they are just moving it from one taxpayer program to another. Judging from the two cartloads of groceries, the suv they load them in, free med insurance and on an on, I wouldn’t call them poor. The people that brought them here need to step up and pay for their welfare, not the US citizen! Obama is the master of blowing smoke, but eastender is running a close second… although I believe business, especially ones that rely on foreign labor should pay higher taxes!
Hot debate. What do you think?

“Legal noncitizens” are NOT illegal aliens, Deano. Which part of “legal” don’t you understand? For your information, to qualify for Medical Assistance you must meet strict income guidelines… and I’m betting you should know that doesn’t mean HIGH income folks are eligible. Therefore, it’s a program for the POOR or the less fortunate among us. Medical Assistance programs are run by the state, which is why STATE legislators are trying to modify it. So neither President Obama nor his predecessors has anything to do with it. Read up on it, or people will accuse you of blowing smoke.
It’s just another wedge issue… I’m glad to see the Globe continues to give you fodder to espouse your anti-immigrant views.

I read up! Medicaid ( MA in Minnesota) is the United States health program for certain people and families with low incomes and resources. It is a means-tested program that is jointly funded by the state and FEDERAL GOVERNMENTS, and is managed by the states. You are half-right. the problem is we have one working whos name is on the SUV but there are seven extened faimly menbers coming out the store with the groceries and the free MA. Just can’t work that way.
