Shaft: N.D. higher ed board meeting over nickname options likely open
February 13, 2012 at 5:51 am in Grand Forks Herald
The published agenda for today’s meeting of the State Board of Higher Education suggests that the board’s planned discussion with Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem concerning UND’s Fighting Sioux nickname could be a closed session, but Board president Grant Shaft says that’s not likely. I am going to see if I can get a license from UND to make Fighting Sioux name and logo gear that can be attached to hats and clothing with velcro………………………….

How about some openness on the pro-nickname group’s part. Their attorney may be working “pro bono,” but who is footing the bill for the motor home driving around the state with petitions as well as the people soliciting signatures?

Yes, sir, let’s see the list of donors, since the nickname supporters are all about “openness”! What do they have to hide? Perhaps the big payday leaders of the petition received too?

If it doesn’t help the UND grow, the name has got to go!

As has been said before, it’s always been only about money. Keep the name, get a hockey arena. Dump the name, get a conference.

Absolutely its about growth, which is different than profit. The last thing I want is the UND going backwards or limited like it has over the past five years. When the UND decided to go D1, that was the time to cut loose the name that the Native Americans didn’t want the UND to have. Start a new era. Reborn as a new UND. I have no doubt the Native Americans would rather have the Sioux name associated with a D1 school and an NAIA school. But as reality bites, because the SR Council refused to agree, the option was lost! Thank you, Charles Murphy and the rest of the SR Council!

you said, UND has gone backwards, and it’s all about growth. So…how do you explain record enrollment? you also said, “When the UND decided to go D1, that was the time to cut loose the name that the Native Americans didn’t want the UND to have”
Where on earth do you get your “facts”?? Spirit Lake voted overwhelmingly to keep the name. SR had a petition awhile back that was signed by well over 1,000 residents requesting their council to allow them the right to vote. Their council of dictators denied.
George Orwell should write a sequel. the brainwashing that has gone on over the last few years is simply frightening.

No sweat Jimbob…your point is well taken….also….as many times as this issue has risen from the dead…it would hardly be a surprise to see George cranking out a sequel.

Oh I’m well aware, Gene. sorry you took that part of my post literally….But really, who can argue with the rest of my post, and the brainwashing of the masses that used to be in favor of the name?

There were two votes among the SR members, the second one had more signatures opposing the name than the one you are referring to with 1,000 name supporting it. Growth is not necessarily about enrollment. It also about an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Many perceive this to be a battle between the UND hockey program vs the rest of UND athletics, and that point is hard to argue. It is no secret that Hakstol worked behind the scenes via email to persuade the ND legislature to make the Sioux nickname law despite the fact it puts the viability of all the other UND sports programs in serious jeopardy. Now Hakstol has been silent on the very real possibility that the UND hockey teams will not have the very lucrative ability to play Minnesota and Wisconsin after next season unless the Sioux name is dropped. Not only will money be lost, the fans will be deprived of the excitement only those teams bring to the Ralph. We have lost NDSU in football, now this will purge our natural rivals in hockey. We the fans, deserve better. Dave Hakstol you are the mouthpiece for UND hockey. You need to swallow hard and do what is right and publicly support the dropping of the Sioux name, just as a grieving family has to do when asked to turn off life support for a loved one. Life isn’t always fair and this is a prime example.
