February 9, 2012 at 5:14 am in Duluth News Tribune
Sen. Roger Reinert, DFL-Duluth, said the lack of consensus for any Twin Cities stadium site spurred his letter to Gov. Mark Dayton. Continue Reading

Putting aside the fact that we would have to come up with around 300 Million to be in the mix, and the fact that most of it would come out of local taxpayers pockets; this would be a great boom for the area and would make me very happy.
But I think I have a better chance at winning the Powerball than to have the Vikes move to Duluth.

Great idea! There are plenty of hotels and restaurants! I say build it, and yes I agree about the liquor sales on Sunday. Can’t even count the times I have made a Sconny run on Sunday!

OK people calm down. It’s just a proposal to highlight other options for a stadium location outside the Twin Cities metro. Before everyone starts freaking out, the article itself states that proponents that the realistic chances are slim but what’s the harm…

Then why did he waste his time, well ,actually, our time, proposing a foolish bill that he acknowledged wouldn’t go anywhere? Is he telling us he doesn’t have anything better to do with his time? Geeze, I hope he doesn’t campaign to hard. We wouldn’t want him over taxing that tiny brain of his.

A billion dollars? What are they building it out of gold? Good luck getting in and out if Grand and 23 are the 2 routes! Either way open the liquor storea on Sunday the state can use the money!

Just another reason why we shouldn’t be sending stupid incompetent people to St Paul and pretend that they represent us. Why just last week Kerry Gauthier was complaining that last years budget was balanced by borrowing money, and then in the next breath complained that Dayton’s proposed bonding bill didn’t borrow enough! Are these clowns for real?

Oh boy, you gotta love that Rep. Roger Reinert and his incredible finesse. What better way to coax the Vikings to the northland then criticize the team. Come on, he sounds like a Packers fan. Get it Congressmen? Roger…Roger? Well, thanks anyway for nosing around this issue, you have proven you are able to sniff out a great opportunity!

Duluth used to have a professional football team, the Duluth Eskimos. They eventually ecame the Washington Redskins.
Take THAT North Dakota! ;}

I love it when people criticze ND. I live across the Red River from that dark dank hole and it makes me smile every time.

And you wonder why we had to pay these dunderhead representatives overtime last year? What a freakin’ waste of time and taxpayer money.

It’s attention-grabbing stunts like this that make Twin Citians quite sure we are a bunch of hicks up here.

Yeah… I’m sure THAT’S why they think we’re a bunch of hicks. Not the ultra-right wing nonsense that they can read everyday here on AreaVoices.

I want to bring a line up that is not mentioned in this story, but is in the Star Tribune version. This is from the DNT: “But he does have a way to help finance the stadium. Reinert has included in the letter to the governor his longstanding but so-far unsuccessful plan to allow Minnesota liquor stores to open on Sundays. That would bring the state an extra $10.5 million in taxes each year that’s now going to neighboring states, Reinert said, revenue that could go to help pay back stadium debt.”
And from the Star Trib: “To help pay for the new stadium, Reinert wants to open up the state for Sunday liquor sales, a cause he has unsuccessfully championed before. Adding Sunday liquor sales would bring in about $10.6 million a year, Reinert said, which is about $20 million shy of the money the state will need to pay its share of the debt for a stadium.
But a 2011 Minnesota Department of Revenue estimate of Sunday liquor sales predicted the change would bring in far less, around $500,000 a year.”
There is a huge difference between 500k and 10 million. Typical DFL math, and typical DNT covering for the DFL in town.
In my opinion, this whole notions of Roger’s is just laughable.

I still haven’t forgiven this jerk and Gauthier for taking pay last summer when they failed to do their job and our state shut down. He must be out of his mind to even suggest this. There is no way in this world, the citizens of Duluth could come up with that kind of money. Reinert is delusional and cannot be allowed to stay in office longer than we have to put up with him.

Why not let the Vikes move? They are an embarrasment to this state. Why reward the losingest team in the NFL with a new stadium? They should at least earn it by winning a couple of seasons. You know what will happen, a billion dollar stadium will be built for them and THEN they will move. It’s another taxpayer supported white elephant in the making.

Ulysses, I do not agree with letting the Vikes move, however, I agree with you in that the team should win a few games. That being said, make the players shell out a few skins? Don’t they make enough?

I agree with the U man and let them move! The No Stars left and we still ended up with a hockey team though the Wild hasn’t done much why can’t we get another football team with an owner that may get the state a championship status? If the people of the state are so involved with keeping the team here why not do what the Packers have done and sell stock in the team to finance the upgrades on the stadium that is older than the Dome will ever be?
