UND athletic director worries about conference’s patience with nickname
Members of the Big Sky Conference have increased their concern over the inclusion of UND because of the NCAA sanctions connected to the ongoing Fighting Sioux nickname controversy, North Dakota athletic director Brian Faison said Thursday.

For shats and giggles jump over to the Duluth’s AV regarding this matter, much different consensus then here. FN’s comment about “beating a dead horse so bad PETA was going to get involved” sums up this controversy. Nothing else thanks for reading.

Here is the issue the NUMEROUS people who are for the nickname and logo are people who NEVER attended the school, not saying they don’t have their rights to be heard, but are these people willing to throw away EVERYTHING when numerous school and divisions will NOT want to be associated with them if they keep it?
What will you people have to support if the team has NO ONE to play? You’d all rather have your cake while the people who PLAY and make up the teams will end up being nothing more than a name. Guess you all can go to the Ralph and The Betty and watch the teams offensive and deffensive lines play each other weekly. Think them games will get old and them players will be beat for playing the WHOLE game with no breaks.

There may not be any teams to play UND if they keep the name and logo. Just cause you live in North Dakota doesn’t mean you deserve the RIGHT to name the school you probably NEVER attended. There are ALUMNI now changing their tune and saying it is maybe the time to change for the school to move forward to bigger and better things. What will the UND Fighting Sioux be if no conference will accept them? Or not TEAMS will play them. MN has already said they WILL NOT play UND in any other sport except hockey if they keep the nickname and logo, so there is an example of a team that has taken a stance on the issue. The Summit League wouldn’t accept the UND in that conference until they let the logo go, Big Sky is also putting out there they may lose their support when other teams decide to not play the UND cause of the name.
So sorry to all the people who think they are taking a stance for something THEY believe in over what is BETTER for the school!!! Once the Fighting Sioux have NO ONE to play and they die to just a MEMORY you can all pat yourselves on the back.

Joe, having a temper tantrum over someone else telling you what to do is neither honorable or courageous. It is juvenile.
That said, the central premise of your argument is still wrong: no one is telling us what to do. If we do not like the way the NCAA is running the show, we can & should leave. If we stay it is a choice & you have to quit the victim whine.

As for your assertion that there are no Seminoles or Utes trying to get rid of those names, see the other threads. There is a very vocal Seminole minority who are against the name. Will the minority become a majority? Up to them.
Hot debate. What do you think?

“Will the minority become the majority?” Does it matter if they become a majority? Isn’t that the reason why we are at this point now? The majority of Spirit Lake voted to keep the name. The majority of Standing Rock wanted to vote on the issue, but they were denied. It doesn’t matter if there will be a majority of people against the Seminoles or Utes; the NCAA has already made up their mind that certain names are ok (why do you think they backtracked and created an appeals process when Gov Bush blasted them when their policy was announced) and the Fighting Irish aren’t real people. Even if the NCAA received enough flack for the Seminole name, they have already set precedence by stating, “The decision of a namesake sovereign tribe, regarding when and how its name and imagery can be used, must be respected even when others may not agree.” They can just as easily repeal their stance against the Sioux name just as easily as they arbitrarily establised it. I sincerely hope the Sioux Tribal members on both reservations go directly to the NCAA to demand equality.

The NCAA is acting like the calvary.. do whatever they can so the Native Americans can be forgotten by everyone. Once all their logo’s and names are gone, within 10 years no one will know who or what Native Americans are. Schools should be free to name their team to Honor their local’s and the state, and it’s history

Joe see the thing you DON’T understand is the NCAA is like s stubborn person who calls the shots, it’s their way or the high way, well we are going to hit the high way and be off with NO ONE going to play with us. I do believe your points, but you CAN’T force someone to change their opinion, the NCAA stood their ground even AFTER the legislature tried to pass a law keeping the name and logo even after all the support and fans that went to the Hockey Tournemnt last year, it DIDN’T change their rule, so they see it as they ALWAYS WILL!! So even if this law gets passed, you can all take pride in seeing the Ralph as nothing but a Glorified Museum on what UND use to be. Cause it will cost UND everything in Division I Athletics. So cudos to all you stubborn close minded people you got your wish and DIDN’T care what you riuned doing it.

“The women’s hockey program could be the first affected by the NCAA sanctions.
Faison said the game would likely be played in Fargo at Scheels Arena.”
Hmmm Maybe I need to rethink my stance. If Fargo gets to host that game then it we will get a lot of Hotel reservations.. Not just from the opposing team, but from the home team as well.. Not to mention all of the restaurant traffic, shopping traffic from the women that come with their husbands and daughters. This could be a very good thing. I mean we do have to pay for that diversion and all some how.
Ok Always you’ve won.. I’m voting for UND to keep the name. Just the economic benefits alone to Fargo would be great. See you at the game…

Please, SBoHE, exert your lawfully mandated authority to sustain the retirement of the name and manage the UND as you are legally responsible! File the counter-injunction and sustain it until the issue is on the ballot and the smart people of ND will overwhelmingly vote against this damaging threat! You want to hear hostile and abusive as you have never heard it before, I think it’s about to begin! So many called this issue a divisive issue, well the divide is growing larger and larger between those whose highest priority is the UND and those who think the nickname is the highest priority. There is no common ground.

And all of God’s people said AMEN. The law will be declared unconstitutional because it is. The SL lawyer said as much. The vote would be irrelevant because the law would already have been nullified.
That means we could all go home till the constitutional amendment comes up for a vote. What a blessing

So do ACC schools have a problem when Florida State shows up on their campus? What’s the difference? The majority of reservation citizens want the name to stay, it’s a handful of leaders on the Standing Rock reservation that want the name changed. In a statewide vote, the name will pass by a large margin. So if the majority of North Dakota citizens and the majority of people living on the reservations want to keep it… what’s the problem? That’s how a democracy works, if a handful of people get their feelings hurt because the vote didn’t go there way, get over it.
Hot debate. What do you think?

Here is how I see it. In the upcoming vote in June, there are going to be 4 main factions voting on this issue.
1. The people who want the name retired because they feel it is wrong to use Native Americans as mascots for teams.
2. The people who feel the name doesn’t insult Native Americans, but want the name retired anyway because of the possible damage that keeping it will probably have on UND athletics.
3. The people who want to keep the name, because they feel the NCAA is wrong and keeping the name is worth the possible cost.
and 4. The people who are rivals to UND (example: Bison fans) who will vote to keep the name in order to destroy UND athletics.
Isn’t it interesting that on the side of keeping the name, you will have both people who adamently support the name, and people who adamently hate UND. Strange bedfellows, indeed.

Count me as a Bison fan who will make certain that I am here to vote in favor of removing the Sioux name. I look forward to rooting for a strong UND athletic program to lose games. I also look forward to competing with another strong university for students and academic success. I see no value in competition with a university, and its athletic program, which are weakened by this continued silliness.

There’s a few who still feel the potential damage is being exaggerated. Most are probably hockey fans who consider the NCAA sanctions trivial. To UND hockey, that’s probably true. But it’s actually sick to think that Brian Faison or President Kelly have anything but UND’s best interests in mind. There’s no logical reason for these fine people to be dishonest. We simply can’t trust the judgement of anyone who says otherwise. Consider how illogical and paranoid it is to HATE the UND leadership, the attorney general, all the presidents of the Big Sky, the NCAA and the hundreds of organizations who disagree with you. This phase of things will likely end with an attorney general’s opinion or a court ruling. It could theoretically end before the June vote, if the SBHE would take this on today, no, yesterday and challenge the constitutionality of the original Carlson law. Of the 19 nickname battles, ND is the only one left fighting this, an issue that was settled almost four years ago. Alwayscorrect claims it’s because ND is the only place with heart and the nerve. Trust me, the few remaining advocates are not the tin man or the lion. Step up, people and stop this train and move on to the constitutional amendment phase that will obviously follow.

Where we neglect to point the finger in this mess, is to the obvious: And that is the failure of our state leadership to act at the START of the 3 year period to resolve this. No, instead we sit on our hands until the window shuts. THEN we start poking the big dog (NCAA) with a stick. Brilliant.

lifesnotfair, I don’t think it’s fair to catagorize the actions of the SBoHE as spineless jellyfish. In 2006 the Board of Higher Education voted 8-0 to sue the NCAA for penalizing UND over its Fighting Sioux nickname and logo. In 2007, a settlement between UND and the NCAA was reached preventing the case from going to trial. This was done because it was the opinion of the ND attorney general that if it went to trial, UND would lose. The settlement gave UND three years to gain support from the state’s Sioux tribes to continue to use the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo. If that support was not granted at the end of the three years, UND would retire the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo, remove most of the existing Fighting Sioux imagery in campus facilities, and pick a new nickname and logo to represent UND’s athletic teams. The unfortunate part of all this is that under the terms of the lawsuit, UND never acquired permission to use the name from the Standing Rock tribe.

It will be fun to sit in the Alerus Center with hundreds of other Fighting Sioux fans. And who says we need to play Wisconsin and Minnesota in hockey. We’ll show everyone that we are the UND Fighting Sioux. This whole process has become a big joke — but let’s don’t let common sense get in the way of the Fighting Sioux. Let’s keep this issue alive forever. Nicely done North Dakota.

8 out of 10 stories on these boards are for this name game nonsense, and several of them are pretty close in content. Apparently someone at the Herald is too lazy to look for articles and just slaps up any article pertaining to the Sioux name because of course…..We just don’t care about anything else…..I’m surprised that so many of the same posters want to continue with the same arguments they’ve been using for all these years on this issue…..It’s been said over and over again……We can cut down to say a limit of three related articles and you’d still get every argument ever posted….
