I’m pissed! Being of Irish decent, I’m offended by Notre Dame’s use of “The fighting Irish” as their mascot! ….NOT!

Many native American team mascots are respectful and honorary. But how do we explain that the NFL franchise in the country’s capital has such an insensitive name?

Redskins only refers to the tribe that the Virginia colonists encountered that rubbed red berries on their skin as a ritual.

God Bless the U.S.A. What other country on the planet has it so damn good that something so insignificant such as this is actually newsworthy.

This is worth a fight. Florida has the Seminoles, Washington has the Redskins, and many other teams have names in exactly the same category. Pick on UND, it doesn’t have the political power of either Florida or the NFL. Nuts to that continued liberal think stink!

But a poll of the Lakotah/Dakotah showed support for the name, so what standing does a non- Lakotah tribe have in the matter? It would be like me taking offense to the name Katydid. You should be able to call yourself anything you want. If bugs are offended, so what, eh?

How about compromising and just change the spelling to “The Fighting Sue”. As in the Johnny Cash song, it might be a super motivator for the North Dakota men’s sports teams…

I’m Irish: The “Fighting Irish” of Notre Dame offend me
I’m of Scandanavian descent: The “Vikings” offend me.
I’m Catholic: The “Padres” of San Diego offend me
Oh wait, I understand these are just nicknames and mascots. I’ll get a life and move on…just wish others would. I can’t stand UND but love that they are keeping the Fighting Sioux name!

I’ve always thought the same way Jojo, there are lots of things (sports teams, places, cities etc…) named after all manner of groups of people and I’ve never understood why some people are bothered about some of them and not others. Your examples are perfect….why don’t we press the Vikings or the Fighting Irish to change their names ? Don’t those names offend those groups ?
I’d think a group might actually be honored to have a team, city, lake, county or whatever named after them. Afterall, I can’t imagine any team (in this case) wanting to be known by a derogatory name….so if they picked the name one would assume it’s something they are proud of.
It seems if anyone up in these parts should be offended it would be the Finnish, Swedish and Norwegians….they seem to be the butt of so many jokes I’ve heard. Perhaps I should rush to their defense every time I hear one of them…..just to be fair to all ethnic groups. However most of them just laugh off the comments and move on with their lives. They must have more self-esteem than others. My guess is that if someone decided to name a sporting team after them they would probably be flattered.
The thin skin (just looking for an excuse to be offended) we’re developing as a society is getting old real quick.

i would think the American native groups would be intersted in far more pressing matters than this, reservation crime/gangs, vast unemployment, vast unutilized access to formal education, accepted poverty. I see in todays paper the typical liberal yellow journalism of Lindstrom and his unshaking ability to create political cartoons and the level of an 8th grader. Look for offense, I guarantee you will always find it. Ours is a nation of ever growing whiners and crybabies.

so very true…eight out of eleven topics on a nickname issue is way to much…they leave them up forever….comments so long and dull you would think they were writing their thesis…the only good parts are when they bicker back and forth and call each other names…and that gets dull after a while…
