Newspaper reviews shows bogus signings, but not enough to derail recall; anti-carp group wants presidential contenders to weigh-in, more state news
February 8, 2012 at 2:34 am in RiverTowns.net
A careful review of 500 recall petition signatures turned up about 15 percent that weren’t valid, but the large cushion of extra signers should ensure a recall election will proceed. Also, a Wisconsin Congressman wants a more thorough review of ethanol safety before the DOT allows the sale of a higher-ethanol blend. Plus stories about thin-ice and sturgeon-spearing, redistricting allegations and a Kenosha-area car-jacking. Continue Reading

At least those 15% will not actually be able to vote when the election actually happens.

15% bogus signatures? Who says we don’t need voter ID?

15% by those standards. I would bet that the actual number is twice that. Let’s figure that 750k sigs are legit. It would seem that the numbers just aren’t there for the dems to win this election. Remember that in the past recall Harsdorf had more signatures against her than Moore got in votes. Walker had 1,128, 000 votes in 2010. He’ll win even bigger than last time.

The GAB is nothing but a left wing partisan hack. They’re disgusting the way they’re road blocking any attempts to prove the invalid signatures.

I like how Alice is absent in this discussion. She has nothing she can say…her party is a fraud and they are proving once again they will do anything to win. Even though the state is pointed in the right direction. I imagine she will no come on here and attack me…thats ok, as always, we have the TRUTH on our side not a progressive spin.
Hey did everyone see WEAC threw their support behind Falk? The significance? None of the “name” democrats from this great state will touch anything to do with these corrupt unions…they are the scourge of the political scene.

Sure, a 15% problem without actually verifying that a name has a valid signature, or that the person actually lives at that address. I’ve seen sheets where it looks like someone sat down with a cup of coffee and copied names out of the phone book. That’s fine. Half who signed won’t bother to come out and vote, because they were too spineless to say no to signing or they didn’t even know what or why they were signing. Yes, Moore got fewer votes than signatures. Will be the same thing here.
Don’t forget the pent up anger from millions around the state who are ticked off about the entire prospect of a recall. Doesn’t matter who the dems run….they will go down in flames.

Just like there are people who signed the petition who will never vote because they are dead or fictional…or signed the petition with no intention of ever supporting a union backed recall.
Hot debate. What do you think?

What are you suggesting, Kari, that Republicans initiated the fraudulant signatures? No one on the right wants to see a recall election that will undoubtedly waste millions of dollars and could potentially put the state back in the hands of the Democrats who put us in the horrible situation we’re now coming out of.

I’m saying anything can happen. Neither side has been 100% fair and equal, and it only take a few rotten apples to spoil the bunch. The article also mentions that some of the invalid signatures were because of PO boxes for addresses, incorrect dates, legibility questions, and in one case, a homeless women’s name was removed because she listed her address as “homeless”.
In last summer’s senate recall frenzy, there was a repub. group trying to recall a dem. senator. Instances of fraud surfaced there as well, and what did the right claim? That the left was trying to sabotage their recall effort with fabricated fraud.
All I’m saying is that both sides do a fine job of pointing fingers.
Oh, and I love how some claim that the right is so honest and ethical, yet openly talk about writing in Walker on the dem. ticket. If he truly is the best person, he will win the election fairly.

Kari, when Governor Walker wins the recall election fairly, will you admit that he won?

I’m not one to count my chickens, but I’m also not a sore loser. If Walker does win FAIRLY (meaning no cheating on either side), I can acknowledge that. I was actually OK with Walker in the very beginning, but now I think he’s more about his own agenda than the good of the entire state. I don’t like the guy, and if he goes, I’ll be cheering on the new governor. How about you?

Kari, you said, “now I think he’s more about his own agenda than the good of the entire state.”
Where you see that, I see an unusual politician willing to deal with the financial burden this state has accumulated over 15 years, and that is the only issue that affects every person in this state.
Getting a business into Superior mostly benefits that area, rebuilding an interstate in Milwaukee mostly benefits those people, there’s even one medical assistance program that benefits only the residents of 57 counties while leaving out people in 15 counties. And how many state programs or grants target only Milwaukee Co?
I find Walker to be one of the few politicians willing to put his political career on the line to do what needs to be done for a fiscally health state (look at Greece as an example of public employee *rights* and unhealthy government.)
A commenter at Althouse who is on the board of a company shared how the company pursued its expansion needs. They are headquartered in Illinois, but absolutely would not expand there. Wisconsin was out because of the hostile/unsettled political climate even though WI had a lot of other positives. They ended up in a southern state. This recall, while within the *rights* of citizens, is having a lot of negative impacts on the state.

I’m thinking that those who want this to happen, are going to do it by the book. Those who do not, are going to lie, cheat, and deface everything they can!

I disagree with you grimace. I think those who want the recall will do what it takes to get the signatures. One evidence of that is appearing on senate recall sheets, people signing who live outside the respective district. The person soliciting signatures is supposed to be responsible for the accuracy of those signing. There appear to be a lot of inaccuracies, but I think Walker would be better off telling the GAB “no signature challenges”, lets get on with the $8 million dollar recall election.

How is writing in a Scott Walker vote in the Democrat primary illegal? It’s an open election and any legal voter can vote for whom ever they choose.

It’s illegal to run simultaneously on 2 different party’s tickets. If he were written in on the D ticket, it would be disqualified because he is already on the R ticket.

Maybe, but you need to show a source for that as I can’t find anything that backs that.

Because people write in a candidate not on the ballot doesn’t mean that person is running on both tickets. If I wrote you in, does that mean you’re running? No, it doesn’t so it’s not illegal.

Yes, this is from a conservative point of view…but Alice, if you can step away from the progressive kool-aid for a minute and read some very evident truths.

I was kind of hoping your link would provide an answer as to what the recall is about, if not the WEAC. Although it does mention a grassroots recall.

I wish the question you asked, and others have asked, “what the recall is about” would be answered by Alice or one of the other angry people .
This whole WI protest mess started over PEs paying more of the cost of their health and pension costs, but that doesn’t seem to be mentioned anymore.
Some people claim Walker is a hypocrit for not saying he would reform PE collective bargaining to balance the budget during his campaign. But he did say he would balance the budget. Did people think that only meant raising taxes? If what Walker did was so horrible, why did Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett (who Walker defeated in the governor race) use the Walker reforms to deal with Milwaukee budget problems…why didn’t he just raise taxes or lay off people? Barrett did a mayor flip-flop, yet he isn’t facing a recall.
So what are the reasons for a recall? And what will a Democrat govenor do to improve the state, and not just the PEs?
