State set to receive, check nickname petitions
February 7, 2012 at 12:45 pm in Grand Forks Herald
With a last, almost celebratory search for signatures at a Bismarck Century-Bismarck High hockey game tonight and just outside the Capitol, Fighting Sioux nickname supporters are poised to deliver petitions to force a statewide vote on the long-running and controversial issue. Continue Reading

“Let’s just say the opponents (of keeping the name) are wrong,”
Espegard?
Hey, isn’t it February…..shouldn’t he be in Florida by now?

I have no dog in this fight. As an outsider, I can only sigh.
If successful this will only continue the sanctions now in place (sanctions that have not been felt since there are no NCAA tournaments UND is involved with; Under sanction, UND will not be able to schedule Minnesota for hockey, since Minnesota will not schedule Universities under sanction ( and perhaps Wisconsin). I do not know that as a fact but it would,’t surprise me that Wisconsin has the same guidelines as Minnesota.
I will not affect the WCHA schedule but that schedule ends soon. Thanks Colorado College and the University of Denver, The University of Northern Colorado, Nebraska Omaha, etc. see you the next time we are all in the same conference.
So much for rivalries.
It will probably not affect the new NCHA schedule but it will affect UNDs participation in the NCAA tournament.
UND will not be able to host tournament matches. They will be able to participate in the NCAA tournament but as a road team. Ask the coach what he thinks of that state of affairs.
It very well could affect UND’s invitation into the Big Sky Conference. The conference has already indicated their concern and mentioned there are member institutions who will not schedule teams under sanction.
So this is what you want, The “Fighting Sioux” forever, unable to play the Gophers and Badgers in the regular season, unable to compete in the Big Sky conference in football, and perhaps unable to continue competing in the Missouri Valley BB conference, unable to compete in the NCAA Hockey tournament except as a road team, sans the “Fighting Sioux ” logo on their sweaters.
Just so you can be known as the “Fighting Sioux”?
Or better, the “Fighting Sioux – who no one will play.”
Like I said I have no dog in this fight, I am a Gopher fan. It is great competing with UND in Hockey. They have a quality program and present a true challenge. That could change however; Minnesota is joining the Big Ten in Hockey. TGhey will not schedule UND while UND is under sanction.
The fervor of UND “Fghting Sioux” diehards amazes me.
You are willing to sacrifice all so you can save your cartoon character and “Fighting Sioux” name?
As someone aid, you cannot fix Stupid.

Mark:
“Minnesota will not schedule the Sioux. ” You are forgetting that horse left the barn a long time ago when those suits down at the “U” decided to start their own hockey conference for MORE $.
Follow the money, Mark. The big “maroon and gold” figured there was more money to be made and more control to be had over their own hockey conference. Just be sure to let us know how it works out. BTW, when you are a perennial power in the world of college hockey, you will have no problem finding quality teams to play. Good programs don’t give a rat’s rear about the name…they just want a quality series with a quality team. They aren’t coming or not coming to the Ralph to make a social policy statement.
There have been so many people crying the sky is falling. I thought I felt something hit me on the head this morning…

Herald says:
“Brian Faison, UND’s athletic director, and Peter Johnson, a spokesman for President Robert Kelley, each referred questions to Grant Shaft, president of the State Board of Higher Education,
Shaft was not available for comment.”
Faison, Kelley and Shaft…

If this hair brained effort would be allowed to stand, it will end UND athletics as they presently exist!
I cannot imagine the voters of ND being so stupid as to vote for a measure that would accomplish the above!
Take pride in this petition, those associated with it should be ashamed of what they are doing to UND!

The University of North Dakota has done nothing to deserve this treatment by the NCAA.
The University of North Dakota’s use of the Sioux name and logo is not hostile and abusive.
In spite of what President Kelley believes, the University has nothing to apologize for and no reason to bow down to the ignorant and racist policy of the NCAA.
If Kelley was the President of the University of North Dakota and not some puppet for his buddies at Berkeley and the NCAA he would join the Spirit Lake Sioux and the people of North Dakota.
Kelley would simply tell the NCAA:
“Do what you think you have to do, the University of North Dakota has done nothing wrong and will not stand idly by if the NCAA attempts to label the alumni of UND and the people of North Dakota as ignorant racists.”
But Kelley won’t say that…because he, along with the NCAA, believes the alumni and the people of North Dakota are ignorant racists.

What if the NCAA says, all UND athletic events with teams using the mandated nickname in NCAA sanctioned leagues will be counted as exhibition games? There goes even D III.
It is already obvious it makes no difference to the NCAA if the Fighting Sioux name is in law or the constitution!

“What if the NCAA says,”
What if the NCAA says that Native Americans (Sioux) cannot celebrate their heritage at an NCAA event, but they are OK with the European Americans (Irish) celebrating their heritage.
The NCAA should stick to screwing over the athletes and selling overpriced hot dogs…that is what they are there for, not social engineering.

I think sometimes we forget the little things that make this country of ours great. The chance for everyone to have their voices heard is a freedom unlike so many other countries. If you think about it out of the sports realm it would be the NCAA as a dictatorship. Because we have democracy everyone is given the chance to have their voices heard.
If you really look at the issue it’s pretty childish. It turns out to be a bunch of crap. I don’t like you using my name – well who actually owns the name? What’s next? We better change Dakota too? I think we as a nation get on this political correctness bandwagon and abuse it.
It’s like the school in california named cougars – uh oh that might offend some women. Please spare me the side of stupidity and let’s get back to reality.

“i agree 100% they will end up destroying the college”
Yeah. Because Colleges are about athletics. Who would be so naive as to think that academics would be important? That’s not why students enroll.
The nickname uproar is a feeble excuse for the politicians to not make headway on issues that actually matter. It’s a diversion ploy; keep us agitated about the trivial crap so we don’t notice that they still can’t set a proper budget or deal with REAL issues.

It’s incredible how delusional you people are! UND Athletics, unless something drastic occurs, are over.
The questions still begs: “Where are you going to wear your logos?” The coffee shop? The bar? Around your house? There won’t be any athletic events to wear them to, so what point are you trying to make?
All you will have done, if you are successful, is destroy a great athletic program and diminish a great University. A nickname and logo are more important than the University itself? What is wrong with you?

In 2005 the Florida State president said he couldn’t believe how anti diversity the NCAA was in their policy that told FSU they had to retire their logo. FSU won. They still sell jerseys & hats with the logo.
