Local view: Northland votes for Democrats are votes against economic self-interest
February 7, 2012 at 6:00 pm in Duluth News Tribune
In perhaps the most poignant ad of the 2010 election, Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia took “dead aim” at the controversial cap and trade bill by shooting at it. In the same ad, he decried federal spending, touted his NRA endorsement and promised to repeal the “bad parts” of “Obamacare.” The ad was conservative in tone and typical of a Republican. The message was that Manchin is a Democrat but not that kind of Democrat.

Mr. Zbaracki, if you indeed earned the degrees listed you should have better research skills by which to support your position. Ir order as they appear in your piece-
Carbon policy would not cripple West Virginia’s economy. Mining plays a much smaller role in that state than you suggest. What Carbon policy would do is decrease the amount of income the political bosses of West Virginia have. Those coal interests who have purchased their way into the dictating politics in the state would lose out so their purchased politicians have to puppet their demands.
Try actually reading some research – http://www.wvpolicy.org/downloads/BoomsBusts072111.pdf – instead of flipping channels.
The polls from Fox news may show some majority of Americans in support of a Keystone pipeline. But the facts that lie within the Nebraska state government is that the state government asked for the pipeline to be rerouted away from the Ogallala aquifer as they had concerns about the security of the pipeline. The state of Nebraska was joined by hundreds of land owners along the way that did not want to risk their land for a fossil fuel product destined for sale overseas. The pipeline bosses refused to alter the course of the pipeline due to cost and result on profit margin.
And the technology and testing has been done and the conclusion is available through our countries research labs; there are plenty of ways to get of fossil fuels right now. It is just large scale implementation is being fought by the fossil fuel lobby and their minions. Just like West Virginia, the fossil fuel industry is only powerful because of decades of purchased political interest. It is not in the interest of the common man to have them continue to push their corporate greed agendas any further.

Mr Z is completely right ! A vote for dems is a vote against prosperity, jobs and general economic well being! It’s a vote for more food stamps and wellfare checks as well as unemployment checks! Their policies have never worked and as you can see unders comrade occubama they aren’t now ! Libs are notorious for their extreme socialist beliefs ie. marxism, communism, statism progressivism ! Progressivism is in fact regressivism, digressivism and repressivism !!Vote for a dumocrat and you vote for death and depravity, killing babies and gay marriage! You can’t get any more immoral than that !! A vote for a dumocrat is a vote for failure! Look at how depressed the Iron Range and Northen Wi has been for years under their thumb!!They try to put road blocks up every time a business wants to come in. Thank GOD that Northern Wi is showing some kind of life thanks to Gov Walker and Northen Minn in spite of the dem legislators and wacko conservationists !!

A vote for a Republican is a vote for unregulated global trade, which is a vote for sending jobs overseas, which is a vote for unemployment here in the U.S., which is a vote against your economic self-interest. When you privatize public goods, and focus on trading instead of producing what you consume, you are effectively bleeding this country dry. It happened in Argentina, it’s happening in Japan, and it’s been happening here since the 70s. All the wealth becomes concentrated in the hands of the few, and the majority of working people see their wages decline – which leads to all the heart-string issues like welfare that Republicans complain about in the first place.
Globalization takes from the rich and gives to the poor, but in the worst way. It takes jobs away from rich countries and moves them to poor countries. The rich countries face huge unemployment/underemployment problems while poor countries become trapped in wage slavery. And while Democrats get bought up and shut up by the business-interest that profit from this system, Republicans try to sell this new economic model to us as if it were the best thing to happen. It’s the worst thing to happen! And unless people stand up and say, “I don’t buy into party politics, I oppose the entire economic model,” then the nation will continue it’s downward slide as multinational corporations siphon all the remaining land, labor, and capital for themselves.

The thing is though people of all political stripes have other values they weigh against their economic interests. I for one oppose Keystone XL because I do not want to be personally enriched by seriously harming the environment. Those on the Right have their values as well, as What’s the Matter with Kansas examines. And while I disagree with the (subset) of the Right’s “social conservative values”, I do understand they can trump economic interests just like my values for economic justice, anti-U.S. imperialism and environmental protection can trump mine.
