Reshaping Grand Forks schools
January 28, 2012 at 3:10 pm in Grand Forks Herald
The 400 or so parents who attended a Grand Forks School District public forum this past week listened intently to proposals that could change which school their children will attend, but they had plenty of ideas of their own.

The “Big Lie” here is the distortion of what “capacity” the schools have.
How many students did Viking have in 1970? That’s a more accurate measure of the true capacity of the school.
Building MORE capacity is a crime against the taxpayers. We have more than we could possibly use in the next five years, according to the official report–and probably more capacity than we could use in ten years.
The school board is being irresponsible.

Having three children, I do feel having adequate space to educate our children is important. Just as important is using our tax revenue with frugality. If the evidence is there to support a new school, then let’s build. On the other hand, I will not support a new school with biased research.
“More may be coming. In five years, the district is projecting 683 more students or a 10-percent increase over this past fall, most of it at the elementary level.” GF Herald
1. MORE MAY BE COMING?……. REALY………..MORE MAY BE LEAVING!
2. Fall 2011 experienced a .08%( the first increase in 15yrs) increase. In order to meet the projections of 10% in 5yr , we would need to see current .08% increase more than double in 2012.
Perhaps the best policy would be to monitor the capacity levels of the elementary system for the next two years. If we break ground by spring of 2014, we should be able to have an elementary school built before there is a major crisis. We don’t need to jump to conclusions without the supporting facts.

If we keep relocating people from Somalia and other African nations to here, of course we will need more schools.
Maybe we should just have the Churches that sponsor them build the school from their collection plate.

RIght on Cap! They can also cover all the other costs that get passed on to the taxpayers. If I brought someone here from another country to live in this area I would expect to sponsor them until I was certain they could make it on their own and not just a month or two. This would include living expenses, teaching them English, and getting them prepared for the work force. I would feel accountable for that person the entire time they were here as my guest. I wouldn’t invite them here and than teach them about government assistance. These do gooders do more harm to our country than good. I’m not a racist….I am a realist.

How much has gotten piled on the GF taxpayer over the years because the squeaky wheel in this town always seems to get greased, not matter what the expense or how few wheels there are?
