Hikers come face to face with bear in den near Superior
January 27, 2012 at 6:00 pm in Duluth News Tribune
Mike Zauhar of Superior and two of his boys were hiking in the woods outside Superior recently when they came across something that looked like a bear den.

This sure is a dry year. That bear sure is missing its thick white layer of insulation and camouflage.

“Hey kids, let’s all go stick our noses in a bears den with possibly a Momma and her cubs in it!” Most peoples sense of judgement and entitlement just stun me on an almost daily basis.

I look at as “a good thing”.
This family is out in the ‘WOODS’.
Their not walking down some state funded,, DNR ,,25 million dollar trail.!
I hope they do not disclose the location of the bear den.

Yeah, great article until the bear wakes up, then it will be just another article about some bozo getting killed by a momma bear.
Come on you losers. These critters will serously mess you up, once they wake up and find you in the area!
Then again, some loser getting killed by a mother bear, could be the best thing for the bears.

I’m surprised Sam wrote this article. The ‘human’ was clearly looking for a few moments of fame (and a den) and got it. Lets hope the mother bear was not so frightened that she vacated the den leaving her cubs to die. If you want to see the affects of this type of irresponsible behavior, see Facebook, Wildwood Rehabilitation’s story posted today about a cub who died after its mother was frightened by irresponsible humans. If you want to see bears, visit the Bear Center in Ely. I’ve hiked my entire adult life and have happened upon what have appeared to be bear, fox, coyote and mountain lion dens…no responsible person would stick their head in and then, come back for photographs. Thank you.

Well said, Nancy. If people want to see images of a momma and baby bear in a den, don’t go looking for one in person in the wild. You may get hurt, or momma may flee and baby may pay the price for your curiosity. If you’d like to see what is going on in a bear’s den (with cubs) this time of year, go to:

and watch Jewel the bear and her cubs. Thanks!

I agree with Peg…visit bear.org for some wonderful live cam feeds of a momma bear and her two newborn cubs born last Sunday in the wild in Ely, MN. You can also click on Lily and Faith’s den cam and see a momma bear and her yearling as they hibernate in Ely.
To all the others who are afraid of black bears…nothing to be fearful of…the media has played with our heads for years and they are not the ferocious animals the media has for years led us to believe. Dr. Lynn Rogers in Ely, MN has been studying black bears for over 40 years and has educated so many people. We need to see his evidence he has provided and believe what he is teaching the world….not what the media says or the DNR says about black bears. I have been around tame bears and wild bears and have learned so much. Please check out bear.org and get educated….the right way.
