Residents to get written apologies after city gives trees severe trims
January 26, 2012 at 11:47 pm in The Jamestown Sun
The Jamestown city engineer’s office will be issuing written apologies to property owners where boulevard trees were harshly pruned this fall. The action was the result of the Jamestown Public Works Committee meeting Thursday.

“The issue arose when several property owners challenged the city’s effort at trimming branches of boulevard trees that extended into the street.”
if only the workers had stopped at branches that extended into the street. in reality, they were hacking off everything from the trunk towards the street. Even my neighbors 8 ft tall tree got half of it chopped off. (8 ft tall trees do not extend to the street.)

What’s ridiculous is that they don’t want to replace the trees because they’re “city property” if they’re on the boulevard. Even though that’s true, I have a direct question for the mayor and the rest of the city, because I know they read these comments:
If this had happened to the trees at city hall or those at the LEC, would they have been replaced?
Would you have expected a private company, had they trimmed the trees so poorly, to come up with restitution?
The answer to both of those questions is “YES”.
MAKE IT RIGHT.
It’d be nice to see someone at the city admit they were wrong AND make up for it.

When is the city going to maintain their grass on their boulevards?

Eckman said the branches that were cut were well above the height of any snow removal equipment the city uses.

Judging by the streets the past two years, I didn’t know the city actually used snow removal equipment.

Just another example of the mayor and city employees abusing thier positions. Restitution should be made.

too bad the city workers were not instructed on how to properly trim trees before they were set loose on the boulevards. maybe a tree expert could have instructed them not to just remove all branches on the street side of the trees, up to 20 ft. do we have a tree expert on the city payrolls? maybe even a city forrester? yes we do. I wonder why he was not involved with this tree cutting effort.

An apology from the city engineer. Now that’s impressive.

He stepped up and personally took the blame even though he didn’t need to. I would say that is integrity at its best, definitely no need for sarcasm on that one.

although somewhat true, sending a letter with his signature seems pretty minimal action for destroying so many trees. But I guess it’s better than Mayor Andersen’s response (too bad, boulevards are city property anyway). That’s pretty poor, considering we have 5-10 yr old trees that used to be nice trees, but now will have to be replaced.

Reed is a good guy that is limited by the system he works in. I remember when he fought tooth-and-nail to get money for people during flooding due to city negligence. Obviously he can’t un-trim the trees, but there are a few things that can be done.
1. Restitution – replace the trees. Obviously the trees would be replaced in a second if they were at City Hall.
2. Specials – he can make sure that the home-owners are not charged a cent on their city specials for the destroyed trees. I imagine this will be factored in, anyway, but no homeowner should pay for this kind of destruction.
3. Let the private businesses in town have this business. It’s not government’s place, at any level, to take business away from private enterprises that specialize in this area. Jamestown has plenty of tree services and they should be very upset that the city is taking on tasks like this and doing a poor job at them.
