Nickname supporters on making Feb. 7 petition deadline: ‘It’s going to be close’
January 26, 2012 at 10:34 am in Grand Forks Herald
With just two weeks to go before the Feb. 7 filing deadline, the petition drive to put the Fighting Sioux nickname issue to a statewide vote in June has about a 50-50 chance of succeeding, spokesman Reed Soderstrom said today. Continue Reading

Thank you to the people of ND for showing your common sense. This issue has gone long enough.
The law is unconstitutional so this is an exercise in futility, and the more we prolong the inevitable, the harder it is to move on.
Again, thank you ND for letting your common sense show.

common sense?
If your definintion of “common sense” is acquiescing to an ignorant, useless and racist policy designed by some liberal elites so they can sip wine with President Kelley, slap each other on the back and congratulate themselve on how $tupid and backwards those North Dakotans are…..yes….
congratulations.

Halfway toward 13,500 signitures? Seems like the majority of the state is not as worked up about the issue as some would want us to think.

Exactly…outside of a few select areas of the state (GF county, Spirit Lake, et.al.), very few people care.

Sorry to say, but the 200 or so signatures that were on the petition that is circulating ‘the rock’ are invalid as the sheet was left unattended and there were no dates on any of the signatures.

Nice Always. You are now on record advocating voter fraud? What’s next: broken kneecaps for those who disagree with you? Should I get my old Knee brace out?

Of course he is.. Which is why when the first article about this came out I stated that the ND Officials better make sure that everyone on that list is a legitimate voter.
I would be so bold to say that there are probably deceased people on that list.

What is more interesting is that these illegal signatures are located on SR, the very place the nickname supporters are convinced will rise up and demand justice. No supervision or dates, if there was anyplace in the state that you would think they (the nickname team) would insure accuracy, that would be it.
I remember trying not to be rude and laugh at Bismarck’s ex mayor as he was telling me how when the NCAA saw how many voters on the SR reservation voted to keep the name, that they would immediately cave and ask our forgiveness.
I have a feeling him and Always are going to be very disappointed when their dreams are dashed.

I can’t hit reply as this forum software is bad in that aspect..
Anyways @FN – not its not surprising to me at all. It is an area of the state where it is virtually impossible to accurately assess the data. So those numbers that will put them over the top will be from SR and SL areas.

I evaluate all your posts on their own merit. Sometimes I agree, sometimes I disagree. But this “snitch” business is way over the top. You are suggesting a Machievellian approach to this whole thing.

From the article: “….everybody is for it, everybody wants to keep the name.”
If everybody wants the name, why is it “going to be close” and have “about a 50-50 chance of succeeding”?

Common sense must prevail here. It’s not whether one likes or dislikes the nickname/logo. It’s all about saving athletics at UND. Bottom line: if you sign a petition, you are signing a document that is in favor of shutting down the UND Athletic Department. I like the nickname and logo, but we did not meet the requirements that the NCAA set down for us in order the keep it, so, as members of the NCAA, we must abide by their rules, whether we like them or not. So, let’s move on folks! Get a grip! It’s only a nickname/ logo we are talking about here! Where are you going to wear your logos if we lose athletics? NDSU games?

Even better….”Endeavor to persevere”
Lone Watie: We thought about it for a long time, “Endeavor to persevere.” And when we had thought about it long enough, we declared war on the Union.
A co-worker and I would use this phrase whenever we were given some task that the people in power said would be to our benefit, and when we knew it was all BS.
Kind of like the NCAA, NDBHE, and Kelley banishing the Sioux from the University of North Dakota.

I get more enjoyment out of reading your comments and how you guys go back and forth than I do watching television. This is the kind of reality entertainment that I enjoy. I’m giving you guys two thumbs up once again.

If was an athlete in ANY sport and being recruited by UND, the last place I would consider attending ccollege, if I read the ignorance coming out of this blog, would be The University of North Dakota. And the person who is ALWAYS INCORRECT would be my chief motivation for not going to UND.

After spending Friday & Saturday evenings gathering signatures, I was a bit surprised by the lack of negativity when I asked people to sign petitions. I figure that for the 300+ signature that I received, j got about 50 “no’s”. And even a couple of them came over later & signed. For me, I want to see the question on the ballot. I want to see how the precincts on SL & SR vote, as well as the rest of the state. Ihave also been surprised by Bison fans in the Hillsboro/Clifford/Galesberg area: they want the name & rivalry to return. I will be on Hope o. tuesdY afternoon, Carrinington that night & O’Kelly’s on Thursday evening; it wil be interesting to see how I do
Lastly: why are people afraid of letting people vote? No, I don’t think there will be adverse Big Sky conference effects (& no one “knows” for sure. My opinion means as much as any ati’s on this!) and the NCAA sanctions are
liveable. I am wondering about whether-or-not the vote totLs from SR. If they are for keeping the name, will lead to a new understanding? If their is a statewide vote, & it’s against keeping The Fighting Sioux name/logo, I will live with it, knowing that, while manybe too late, good people tried to do the right thing!
What a great Hockey sweep!!! And what a super Saturday: M &W Hockey & BB all win! Go Sioux!!!

I agree, great job on the sweep.
As for the SR vote totals, they are meaningless for several reasons:
1. the time frame covered by the agreement is long gone. It was not open ended, whenever you finally get their approval let us know and we will reconvene and reevaluate.
2. Even if the agreement was open ended, it called for the agreement of the SR Tribe; that means its official representatives. Not a back door, “we couldn’t get the tribe’s government to agree, but we got a lot of their people to; doesn’t that count?”
3. The law you are trying to put back into effect was unconstitutional, your lawyer said as much. The SBHE and the AG were spineless wonders the last go round. I doubt if they will be this time — although I freely admit I could be wrong. I bet if you do get the signatures, and the repeal of the repeal passes, the SBHE represented by the AG will remember ND has a constitution and prevent the law from ever being put back into effect. Like I said, I could be wrong. Both the SBHE and the AG have not exactly shown their metal in this controversy.
We discussed ad nauseum the FSU agreement. FSU has a signed agreement with the tribe’s legal representatives. As I said above, what is unique about their agreement is the tribe dictates when and how the imagery can be used.
I think for the NCAA to come around you would need a signed agreement from both SL and SR. Since I doubt SR is going to cooperate, your only hope is the Constitutional Amendment.
Good luck with that. Nothing personal, but I will definitely fight tooth and nail to keep an advertising slogan out of the founding document.

Don Barcome, Jr. is well intentioned and I know he thinks he is doing the right thing. The problem is that he is dead wrong. If you gather enough names, the NCAA could care less how the vote goes – this subject is closed, as far as they are concerned. And if you don’t think you will be putting putting our Big Sky Conference affiliation in jeopardy, I would suggest you contact Commissioner Doug Fullerton, who will tell you the exact opposite. The NCAA has spoken and the Big Sky Conference has spoken; do you think that they are “bluffing?” What have they both said, repeatedly, that you don’t understand? I am appalled at the lack of understanding of the comments that have come out of Big Sky/NCAA. Please don’t sign a petition; keep the UND Athletic Department going! EVERY sport, including hockey, will be damaged and many will go away – it will be devastating if this petition drive is successful.
