Editorial: Liquor stores provide valuable funding

In the span of a week, the city of Farmington has progressed from a discussion about whether to relocate one of its liquor stores to a much bigger-picture examination of whether it should be in the liquor business in the first place. Continue Reading

It’s pretty obvious to me where the problem lies. Both Apple Valley and Lakeville have already built deluxe liquor stores that have everything one would want. I would suspect, like me, the majority of Farmington residents work to the north, and pass one or more of these locations in their daily commute.
I would find it hard to believe that the mayor, and council have not visited or shopped in any of the surrounding communities liquor stores and reached the same conclusion.
Buying beer and liquor is not an impulse buy; the folks who use it know where it is.
I, and most of my neighbors, spend their dollars in Apple Valley, Lakeville, and Rosemount because that is where the shopping centers are located.
I agree with the editorial comments. If I remember correctly, the accounting system used in the liquor store business was changed so it could be evaluated. As long as it is not a burden on the taxpayers, let’s take the time to analyze and make a good decision. If it is making 2% profit in this economy, I wouldn’t rush to judgement.
In my opinion, Farmington is destined to be a bedroom community for the foreseeable future. Let’s just accept that fact and make the most of it.
