GF Task Force Looks at Changing School Boundaries, Possible New School Construction
January 24, 2012 at 1:03 pm in WDAZ
GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) – School officials are still looking at possibly adding a new school on the south end of Grand Forks, shifting school boundaries and finding a new location for Community High School. Continue Reading

The north end school will be at capacity in 5 years??? Really? Where is the proof in that? What about the south end elementary schools that are already at capacity but will be getting NO relief??? The only boundaries that changed were for the middle schools, high school and Wilder. So in the meantime (the 2 years it takes to build a school) the kids at Century, Kelly, for sre and possibly Ben Franklin & Lake Agassiz will burst at the seams and possibly be in relocatables…nice.

Threed,
The numbers do not indicate any ‘bursting at the seams’ on the south end. Should you want to look into this further the numbers and information are available on the district website. District administration has indicated that they will shift some programs to alleviate any capacity pressures.

I have seen the numbers thank you. Have you seen these schools at peak hours? Has anyone figured out that just because they shift a few programs out of the buildings when or how these kids are going to continue getting quality library time, music, gym and lunch time if you add extra classes? “Shifting programs” still adds extra bodies that deserve the extras as well. I’m just saying that waiting two years for a new school will be a huge mistake, boundary lines should have been changed.

You need to realize that changing boundary lines can not make any significant impact on school population (either to increase or decrease) unless the school district’s in-district transfer policy is amended. Currently, the administration favors a very open policy in which transfers are granted for parental convenience reasons and only denied when the receiving school does not have room. However, after speaking to some Century parents at the public forum, it was mentioned that even if a school is at or close to capacity, some in-district transfers are still accepted. They went on to say further that “it depends on who you know.” Without a policy in place that forces students to enroll in their boundary school, shifting boundaries will not make much difference.
