A Marine accused of killing unarmed Iraqi women and children pleaded guilty to dereliction of duty today, reaching a deal that will mean a maximum of three months confinement and end the largest and longest-running criminal case against U.S. troops to emerge from the Iraq War.

The same excuses were given about the My Lai Massacre in Viet Nam. The problem is, it was standard operating procedure to wipe out villages because they were suspect enemy strongholds. My Lai wasn’t an aberration and either were innocent victims in Iraq.
