Rick Lubbers column: Northland deserves to see Hermantown-East matchup
January 20, 2012 at 6:00 pm in Duluth News Tribune
It’s mind-boggling why a game between the Hawks and Greyhounds can’t be an annual event. And in this town, that’s exactly what it would be an event.

This would be a no-win game for Duluth East. If they win, they were supposed to because they are a larger school. If they lose, they lost to a smaller school.

Forget the win – no win stuff. It’s a game. How about a charity scrimmage @ Amsoil for these guys with proceeds to the Jack Jablonski fund.

Rick’s headline nails it:
After all the hard work, dedication, volunteer hours, and money poured into the hockey programs and facilities around here, the area DESERVES a deluxe rivalry.
I’m afraid the only way we’ll ever enjoy that, though, is if some courageous soul is willing to confront whomever the stubborn pride-bearer is that’s preventing what everyone wants from happening.
-love the Jablonski benefit idea.

Yeah….everyone wants them to play. So why doesn’t the writer ask the coaches or activities directors why it doesn’thappen?….And that excuse of East having nothing to gain is such a cop out.

It’s too late to schedule it in the regular season, but how about after both teams win the state titles in their respective classes in Saint Paul, East and Hermantown play a true state title game at Amsoil Arena? I know the state high school league would never allow it, but there are always ways around it. It could be the “City of Hermantown” vs the “Northeastern end of Duluth”. The teams would magically consist of the players on the high school teams and be coached by the same people as well.
We never should have gone to a two class state tournament in hockey anyway. Roseau has won the state title two times in Class AA since the MSHSL split the state tourney (1999 & 2007) with about 1/7 the enrollment of Wayzata and Eden Prairie. Hermantown should just opt up to AA like Roseau does and not acknowledge that there is a Class A tournament.
