It is called Sex education, either teach it in school or at home. If parents think that young girls and boys are NOT having sex they are clueless as well. The only difference between teens today and when I was one is the availability of birth control options. When the mood strikes you be ready.

If you think some parents are clueless — then how about our aspiring leaders?
Most of the republican contenders are not only against abortion in any form, but are also anti-contraception (Santorum wants to make it illegal), and anti-sex education.
They have to pander to various groups that have “family” in their titles. Their agendas don’t generally have much regard for family planning!

This is the legacy of almost ten years of abstinence-only sex education. The main problem is that most kids don’t wait and then they are clueless.

You can’t tell me that once a girl gets her period she isn’t aware of the consequences of having unprotected sex. These girls are bluffing and full of crap.

tj — don’t take it personally — but you have no idea! One of my favorites (told to me by a nurse) was of a 17-year-old girl turning up to a routine doctor appointment with a band aid across her navel. Yes, she genuinely believed it would prevent pregnancy.
To understand this you have to figure the combination of schools not allowed to do sex education + parents who never discuss it. The result sets up fertile conditions for urban legends and vivid imaginations to breed (no pun intended) all sorts of ridiculous beliefs.
