School finances: Surgical knife being sharpened

Next school year the River Falls School District will have to cut about a million dollars out of a general fund budget of roughly $30 million. Continue Reading

The River Falls school district keeps adding programs and costs and THEN complains about having to cut teachers and increase class size to pay for them because they can’t increase taxes.
I think that this is a bit disingenuous.
We can’t afford “cradle to grave” education and then say we need to cut math teachers, et.al. or increase class size to pay for these unwarranted programs.
Let’s be truthful about what the real problems are….and they are certainly not Readin’, Ritin’ and Rithmetic for K-12 students. It is an overload of other programs that may not be affordable.

Right on, DonVan. I was saying the same thing to myself last week as I was paging through the fancy flyer the RFSD sent out for the “Community Education” program. Page 1 shows the “coordinator” for the program, know what I see? A compensated employee near or above $100K/yr for a job that never existed 2 years ago for an enormous boondoggle. Why doesn’t Mr. Westerhaus take a hard look at how bloated the administrative portion of the SD’s budget and staff has become over the past 10-15 years. How many more “Five Dollar job title” positions can we create a “need” for and have to staff?? I’d LOVE to see the numbers of student enrollment ratio to admin staff 15 years ago as compared to today. How many asst principal’s do we need? “Directors of Curriculum”?? Gimme a break.
