Mary Jo Hotzler named next editor of Grand Forks Herald
January 13, 2012 at 5:10 am in Grand Forks Herald
The deputy editor of The Forum newspaper in Fargo has been named the next editor of the Grand Forks Herald. Hotzler has been at The Forum for 10 years, and has been a reporter, assignment editor and deputy editor. Continue Reading

Advice to the new editor: Keep the online commenting as-is and avoid the SheSays concept (which is so 80s and a bit insulting to both women and men) in the Herald.

Not really keep it as it is…..It needs to keep topics only a couple days and a variety of topics so we don’t get bogged down with 8 out 0f 10 articles relating to the Sioux name change or any other single topic…

Indeed….it’s articles like this that stay in here for 4 or 5 days that I’m talking about…”Please sir…More porridge” This porridge has really gone weak…

Amen Allen. Amen.
As a historian I studied women and gender. I showed the new sections to one of my old professors at the University of Arizona. Now I admit this woman is an old school, 1960s radical feminist. She makes Betty Friedan look like a nun. She launched on a 20 minute diatribe about how insulting this was: someone had to digest the news for her and talk about mothering issues instead of global warming and Newt Gingrich (she is a mother of two and grandmother of 4)?
I hope the new editor channels Nancy Reagan, “just say no”

Congratulations on the new position. I hope this means fewer typos, along with fewer rhyming, alliterative, and “cutesy” headlines.

NOPE! More cutesy —– she’s “Minivan Mom” after all! http://minivanmom.areavoices.com/
And what “She Says” goes. At least now maybe we’ll get more of that Linnares broad’s sexy-azz self promotion up in here. DIVA!

I’d bet what we’ll get are the “leafy spurges” to all individuals and groups who disagree with her.

Looks like more typos, too: “It’s not the zoo’s fault. “

An inside hire means absolutely no change in the Herald’s philosophy.

It’s probably good that an outsider got the job. Hopefully she won’t be afraid of criticizing local government officials and their decisions when warranted.
Hot debate. What do you think?

How is she an outsider? Forum has owned the Herald for some time. She’ll just be moving form Fargo to GF, but with the same mindest she learned from Jack.

She’s from OUTSIDE the Grand Forks area, and she’s outside the grand Forks Big Timers’ club. Jacobs was/is up the keister of Mayor Brown and his boys.

She’s an outsider in terms of where she now lives. She as insider in terms of the company she works for. As I said, watch for her to bring the Jack Zaliskie form of “journalism” to GF. This means a leafy spurge for anyone who criticizes one of the Herald’s sacred cows.

Getting a spurge is better than the passive aggressive way the Herald currently deals with dissenters.

Just try to get it through some heads that A/V is NOT the Herald’s site?

Hi Mary Jo. Welcome to your new position. Can we change up the columnists with those younger and more mainstream. Just look at the faces of the older mainstays. They don’t represent youth or even those in their 40′s such as myself.
Also maybe the comments on certain subjects like the sports team formerly known as the FS and especially the locked out, formerly known as employees of Crystal Sugar, could be blocked or not permitted. Harmony. Peace. And get rid of the oldsters look on the column writers. Probably would boost your readership?

You mean Marilyn Hagerty, Lloyd Omdahl and Mike Jacobs?

I second that. Those old faces and ideas need to fade away gracefully, and make room for new ideas.
Hopefully the paper will start to reflect the views of the majority in ND and GF (conservative, family values, fighting Sioux loving, good people). Not the loud non-sensical, psuedo-intellictual, lunatic minority (transplanted liberal, unwashed, tradition-killing, wack-jobs)..

Yes Skatey exactly. I mean Marilyn Hagerty, Lloyd Omdahl and Mike Jacobs. The look so 1970s. Look at Mary Jo’s face, bright, youthful, hip. The others make us feel like we’re still back on the farm or nothing but farm towns. North Dakota is on the rise like never before. Join the tide I say! Hooyah!

Any change is a breath of fresh air! Hopefully, we will see a tighter news product, less mistakes, and more in touch with actual news happenings in the area. Good old fashioned investigative journalism is what I would like to see more of around here.

I’d be a little careful knockin’ the ‘older’ folks; they are the ones reading what’s left of print-news and do a fair job on the computing machines.
It’s the older folks also who do most of the voting and have the most ducats in the mattress.

Yeah that’s what I was thinking and fearing Richard. You may be 100% right. So I expect the old faces will stay.

Wise thinking Marg to ‘fear’ the older folks, they ARE a force and will be for a long time with ‘boomers’ coming of age.

The three she was referring to are hardly boomers, and for information Richard, we don’t fear you near as much as you would like us too.

The only saving grace visa vie the old folks is they are a self limiting problem: they die. Just like the rest of us.
I like Marilyn Hagerty, she is about as in touch with current events as a New Deal Democrat. That is what I like about her.
Just please God no Ladies Home Journal section. It is too insulting to even discuss. Women: one step forward (Hillary, Palin [I almost choked typing that], the fact that 2/3 of the graduate students at UND are women) and two steps back (Ladies Home Journal section of a newspaper in case you are not acute enough to digest your own news without makeup tips).

From someone that took her orders from the felon Zaliskie; she will surely have sympathy for forgers and people that do not follow bankruptcy proceedings like her ex boss.

I must be the luckiest person on these sights. I keep being the 100,000th visitor. How is that possible? No joke they claim…yeah right. By the way…flashing ads annoy me and I tend to ignore them.
