Letter: New liquor study doesn’t tell whole story
January 12, 2012 at 6:00 pm in Worthington Daily Globe
I read the story about the study under way to see the city would be better served with a new liquor store location. We are really good at paying for studies, but I wonder why we pay so much for them when the results are so unsupportable.

In case you haven’t noticed, the mall is not the epicenter of Worthington.
The eicenter is the superblock that contains Walmart, the strip mall, restauraunts, gas stations, Walgreens, and Hy-Vee.
It would be more convient for everyone is a liquor store was near the shopping centers and a boost in profit too. The liquor store profits benifits the city and I think it should be given a better location.

I personally think our public representatives could use their (our) time, money, and energy in better ways. There are many businesses that could benefit and be more successful if positioned in a more prominent location. Why is the focus on a liquor store? Will this really have a positive impact on Worthington? Do we want this to become part of our identity? I can think of many businesses that could take the same prime real-estate that was proposed in an earlier Daily Globe article. We need businesses that add jobs and provide greater benefit to the community at large. We need businesses that create a positive image and identity for Worthington, to those traveling through our area. We need to continue expanding family friendly retail businesses that will bring people to our community from 30-45 miles. The recent building project for the new YMCA and the current project for the new fire hall are great examples. Also, the development in recent years along Interstate 90 and the new Hy-Vee are positive moves for our city – we need to keep on that track.
