Trees to go:City says about 1,000 along the James need removing
January 11, 2012 at 12:51 am in The Jamestown Sun
About a thousand dead or flood-damaged trees need to be removed along the banks of the James River within Jamestown city limits, primarily for safety and environmental reasons, an official says.

It’s ridiculous that property owners could potentially be charged for removing these trees.
Hot debate. What do you think?

If the property owners don’t pay for it, who should? If somebody besides the property owners should pay for this, then why?
It is my opinion that the property owners should take responsibility for what is on their property that they own. By their own choice, they live next to the river and should be responsible to manage what is theirs. I would equate this to the specials that are charged for street/sewer/gutter maintenance.

I believe that land owners along the river should simply be given a time frame as to when the trees need to be gone. It’s irresponsible for the city to do this themselves. The city has no place doing this on their own and charging for it when it can efficiently be done by the private sector. I support the city’s mission here, but they aren’t the ones who need to seek out the burden of the work. Let the private sector reap the rewards of their labors – that’s true capitalism.

Actually the city has no control over the flood plain other than to spend the money on protection and repairs.
The Army Corp of Engineers has complete control over the flood plain.

If the city has no control then why are they getting involved?

If they are going to remove 1,000 trees, then they should do the right thing and plant an additional 2,000 to make up for it. Everyone should stick to the policy of replacing each cut down tree with planting two new ones.

The city addresses this because they likely have an arborist or someone that is more knowledgeable about such things, compared to the homeowner. I presume the homeowner likes the trees overall, so they are getting expert guidance for free essentially. Now they just have to get the business of cutting the trees down taken care of. Good for Jamestown by trying to address potential issues before they happen, since the property owners are not.

Maybe the city should focus on other more important things, like fixing the sewer system, or setting up curb side recycling. We must be saving a lot of money on snow removal so far, but I’m sure the city counsel (JSDC) will find a way to throw all that money in the garbage as well.
