Duluth Planning Commission delays decision on Central site
January 10, 2012 at 6:00 pm in Duluth News Tribune
The Duluth school district got what it wanted from the city Planning Commission during its regular meeting Tuesday night a reprieve on any comprehensive plan being attached to the former Central High School site.

That’s probably a good idea for now. There’s no need to rush into rezoning it. As unpopular as the school district may be right now, we need to remember that this affects our children. The sale of Central was factored into the long range facilities plan’s funding from the start. Watching the school district get next to nothing for the site may be funny to watch for many people, but the only people who would suffer are students, teachers, and staff.

This is by far the best joke I’ve heard in a long time… “They are not experts in property development,” Leider said of residents who expressed what they would like to see at Central. “We have those types of experts.”…Yes, his Johson Controls experts is what got us into this mess, the biggest taxpayer rip off in state history and problem after problem with no end in sight. As everyone knows these experts forced their bad decisions down our throats and this city will be paying the outrageous price for it for the next 20 years.

They want less publicity and imput. The school board seem to do its best work when not being watched. It will be decided at a closed door session. Still betting on a casino

The city needs to stand its ground. It has the best plan. The school board definitely does NOT. This is what’s best for the city in the long run, not to make up deficits created by the school board.

There is a possibility of a Twin Cities Parochial college purchasing the Central School property, to facilitate a much needed expansion. They may consider leasing a portion to accomodate the Lakeview Christian Academy, which is nearly bursting at the seams now. And who would be greater neighbors and community additions than these?

SB’s plan is so disingenuous it can hardly be called a plan. Let some property experts from outside the “loop” come in a give us an unbiased perspective. All ISD 709/School Board decisions are tainted.

The future of this site shouldn’t be a result of the City’s and School Board’s wrestling match. It should be based on the best use for this site. And I think a business park is a piss poor use for this beautiful property. Politics aside, I think the City could think of something better for that site than a business park. It’s going to look just like the Airport area… crap.

What the……..what do you expect near an airport, million dollar high-rises and luxury car dealerships?

Huh? With how the city has it planned now, it will turn the Central site (which would be quite suitable for million dollar high-rises and luxury car dealerships) into an area with low land value like by the airport. I’m saying that it would be a shame if the view from that amazing overlook was used as a parking lot for a Chucky Cheese. They could think of something better, imo.

This is valuable real estate and should be handled as such. There need not be buffers around it. What are they shielding it from? Warfare? The future development of the site should conform to the existing platting. Do you hear that SB? 13th Street, 14th St, 15th St, 16th St etc…… Count. That’s something you should be teaching the pupils.
