OUR OPINION: Aspen shelter picks ‘easy way out’
December 28, 2011 at 6:30 pm in Grand Forks Herald
If ethics was easy, it wouldn’t be ethics.
That’s a good rule for deciding the right thing to do. And it shows why officials at a homeless shelter in Aspen, Colo., acted selfishly when they facilitated a homeless man’s bus trip to North Dakota. Continue Reading

As far as “Taking care of their own” goes…….Isn’t this guy originally from CA? So he really isn’t one of “Their own” either….

It’s amazing…You take a minor incident that happens all over the country and turn a non story into a major situation. When the real story of how this is done time and again all over the place is basically being ignored…….Good ol’ Jimmy here is made into a major negative celebrity when he’s really done nothing very remarkable. In fact his minor incidents are so minor that in any other situation nobody would even have noticed….He’s no big time criminal and to give him the same attention as one is the Herald being petty just to milk this as much as they can. I realize there’s a lot of slow news days (Especially in a brown winter), but Really?
Hot debate. What do you think?

This is a story because Mr. Savage from the Aspen homeless or medical center that was helping Baldwin talked to the Aspen Daily News in the first place. Isn’t there a rule of thumb that you don’t talk about the inner workings of businesses, marriages, athletic teams, etc. You don’t spill your guts out how you got rid of a problem by bussing Baldwin out of town and then almost sounding glee about the achievement. I think Mr. Savage was way out of bounds ethically shooting his mouth off. There is a really good article in the Aspen Daily News today with some really good quotes from the Williston folks who help people like Baldwin. They are basically going to deal with him correctly. I guess Montana used to do the same thing, but no longer do according to Williston representatives. The article is worth the read.

YHou’re missing my point….The story should have been about the practice and this individual should have been a small part of the story instead of having his picture on the front page like some sex offender or such. This guy has been given way too much attention for such petty dealings….He might be a jerk of epic measure or he might just be someone who is nice as hell until he drinks. In any case he doesn’t really deserve all this attention like a big time criminal……I souldn’t be so angry about it had the Herald just done the article without his picture…but the picture was really going over the line as far as I’m concerned

I assume the GF Herald knows whether Mr. Baldwin is mentally deficient or chemically dependant. If not, I think it speaks volumes of its journalistic ethics.

Not sure why we are making such a big deal of a drunk who peed in public????? I mean it’s not as if he drugged and raped a woman then received leniency from the court.

No, it’s not like the guy has killed anyone, and they didn’t say he was even an obnoxious panhandler. It just seems like he does lowlevel antisocial stuff when he gets lit up, doesn’t it?
It’s plain as day that he just needs some kind of mental evaluation and/or treatment.
Maybe if someone might have taken a bit of time for this guy, instead of making a big ‘story’ out of this?……

How totally absurd is this? good ol’ Jimmy gets three talk boards while the good ol sioux soup gets seven…….Is some child in charge of picking articles to put here??? Or is there just nothing else to talk about other than these riviting subjects that have been beaten to death?

Yes…But is anyone paying attention? When it comes to the Sioux soup bowl …..It’s mostly the same people going back and forth over the same old tired arguments again and again…..Like pigs wrestling in mud…They just never quit because they really love the mud…..They keep the arguments going with each other and you guys don’t notice it so you just slap them up here thinking people are really into those tired old arguments that’s been going on for what? 8 years or more? Somebody needs to monitor that stuff so we don’t just have sioux soup on here….Of course it helps if some other stories don’t get shifted away shrotly after being posted while the sioux soup stories linger for a day and a half sometimes….
