Congratulations to our Canadian friends. What I found most interesting about this story was that the arguments used FOR the Wheat Board monopoly are the same arguments people give FOR the farm bill writ large and the sugar bill in particular. We cannot have free enterprise: we will be at the mercy of the the market, suppliers, transportation concerns, and foreign competition.
You are absolutely correct, just like every other business that is not artificially supported by tax dollars.
Europe supports its farmers because they remember starving to death. We have never had that problem. If the government needs to support some industry, how about the one that makes spare parts for our military equipment. China produces most of them now, and since our next big war will probably be against China, that too me seems a little short sighted.
