Willmar Utilities Commission rejects solar project

WILLMAR The Willmar Municipal Utilities Commission this week rejected a proposal to construct a solar energy project at the site of the utility’s two wind turbines on the north edge of the city.

What is going on over at the municipal utilities? Why in the world would you abandon this project? Have neanderthals recently taken over? Have they been there all along? It’s obvious some don’t give a rat’s about actual laws or opening up the city to lawsuit – and now they are just going to abandon a renewable energy project that will benefit the entire area? Is there something in the water around here? I am amazed by this.

Seems that Willmar city politics have squashed a good, forward-thinking project. Pathetic – to let the opportunity slip thru fingers all because there’s “too much going on internally”. Shortsightedness and an unwillingness to put internal BS aside are going to hurt – not the commissioners who failed to put the city first – but the city, in the long run. Doesn’t seem like elected officials are truly conducting themselves with the best interests of Willmar in mind.
If there’s some hidden story here, then by all means, commissioners, get the story out there – put up a defense. Sticking your heads in the sand in the interest of keeping your internal garbage buried – well, it won’t work. The truth comes out in the end, every time. And right now, it sure looks like the Commission is filled with fools.

I agree, Breezy.
And I have the feeling that this is just the kind of thing those “old boys” would be against, change, in any form, regardless if it was something that would help Willmar.
Maybe there’s not enough money involved for the local tool companies?

Seems pretty dumb to turn down what would be pretty much a free $10 million asset to the city and surrounding area over a little dispute over a GM, doesn’t it?

I’m trying understand what just happened. After 3 years in the works, the council suddenly turns down a $600,000 grant to install the largest solar panel array in the state – an array made with a new collection product by 3M that is able to capture 1/3 more energy from the sun – because of internal struggle’s with the GM. If there is a problem with the GM, deal with it the way professionals are supposed to deal those kinds of problems. And who cares about open meeting laws anyway, am I right? Now that “private citizens” are welcome to closed meetings as well, I’d like to nominate someone from the diligent WCT staff to sit in for the rest of us. Saying NO to the solar project damages this community’s future. Unbelievably DUMB decision.

Lines up nicely with the rest of their current dumb decisions, though, doesn’t it?
And I thought you had a second post on this thread, or am I mistaken?

I did have another post on this thread. It must have struck too close to home.
Probably something about needing “Fresh Blood” on the city council – the good old boys having kept this town out of the 21st century long enough – or maybe it’s my utter disgust at the incestuous relations that continue to make this city look ridiculous. Oh wait! There it is at the top! 26 up votes! 8 down votes. Looks like the Mayor and the rest of the Troglodytes hopped on the internet quick to down vote my comments. LOL.

Wouldn’t surprise me a bit, jasond.
It does look like common sense and a bit of hoped for justice are starting to prevail!
