Actually – if you search for a definition of the word RACE you will find definitions such as:
* A breed or strain, as of domestic animals.
* Synonyms: noun. breed – run – kind – stock – strain
* A genealogical line; a lineage

And, I also read this…in reference to rac·ism/ˈrāˌsizəm/
Noun:
1.The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, esp. so as to distinguish it as…
2.Prejudice or discrimination directed against someone of a different race based on such a belief.
Based on that information, I believe the writer’s choice of words are fitting, in addition to intriguing. Made me continue to read the article.
I see you used the “Google” definition.
Check any other online dictionary and you will specifically fing the word “human” in the definition of “racism”. (Except maybe the Oxford dictionary that just references “someone” in their “theories of racism” entry.)
some·one/ˈsəmˌwən/
Pronoun:
1.An unknown or unspecified person; some person: “there’s someone at the door”.
2.A person of importance or authority.
No matter the definitions, Using an inflammatory word such as “racism” is only adding controversy to what could have been simply an informative article that had the potential (and hopefuly still does) of helping some of the black pets find permanent homes.
Somehow, I doubt a black dog or cat is going to complain too loudly. And I can’t imagine the NAACP bothering with it, either.
Sometimes, a header is meant to grab attention to the story?
I’m interested to see if the Pet Store owner or the Humane Society director were aware that their quotes would be included in a story headed by a question of racism.
Humane Societies in particular can have a tendancy to draw extreme views either megative or positive. I really don’t think adding “racism” to the mix helps.
Even going so far as to simply ‘imply’ an element of racism in pet selection is really a stretch. A connection to race has never even crossed my mind. Critters are critters – be they dogs, cats, tropical fish or even members of the human race. They deserve to be loved and appreciated equally for who and what they are – not for their color.
Two negative votes for THAT? What is wrong with you people? No feelings or compassion for critters or humans of all colors? I feel sorry for you for being so shallow …..
While I think the language of “race” and “racism” should only be applied to human situations, I think there is some helpful information in this article and I am glad that it sheds some light on the peril of shelter animals as well as those for purchase in pet stores, although I tend to think pet stores severely lack responsibility for breeding and purchase animals strictly for profit and not because they actually care. Regardless of the color of a pet, it is sad that millions of animals are euthanized everyday, all of them should have loving homes. My family has a black lab, a black hound, and a black cat, and we love them dearly… along with the three other dogs, 5 cats, and three horses that we have.
It has to be black people that thought this up, because most white people dont think in terms of the color of your skin. Sorry, my picking a pet isn’t because of its color, its because of its health and is it cute. Slavery happened MANY MANY years ago…..for Gods sake, LET IT GO ALREADY!!!
Lots of good information.
HORRIBLE first line of text.
Yes, I believe there is less preference for black pets. But “race” has absolutely nothing to do with it. (I didn’t realize pets had “races”.)

Should we define “person”?
