Come on DNT… How about pointing out that this was a former gas station. There is no reason to believe that there is oil, gas etc. in that soil right off the bat, but how about at least asking the question?

Little too soon. They should have waited til 2012 when the GOP wins. One of their first moves will be to elimnate the EPA. Then silly things like properly disposing waste will not matter. C’mon China and India dump polluted water into local rivers. To be competitive in the world we need to eliminate job killing regulations like this. I mean WLSSD is like, really far away. Like Rush has said,”It is arrogant to think Mankind can effect the envioment”.
Hot debate. What do you think?

Thanks for the sarcasm Andy and thanks for the Star Wars metaphor Merv, the rest of you? I can’t take it anymore. I live here in a major part because of the natural beauty. I am also a contractor. I think Watters needs to pay for his company’s actions. If you don’t care that much about the environment, why do you live here? Just move to some suburb somewhere where you can be around more people like yourselves?
Really, why do you live here in “DFL Duluth”?

…but yet when WLSSD discharges hundereds of thousands of gallons of storm or raw seweage directly into Lake Superior it is deemed “a minor overflow/contribution”. Too much government creating their own jobs and thereby increasing our costs by unfunded mandates, regulations and requirements.

Ah Kurt, wrong. There was a federal mandate requiring Duluth to update it’s sewer system and stop the over flows. That has been accomplished.

Very typical responses so far from the pro-business, ultra conservative crowd. The city’s water quality specialist said “I witnessed them pumping sediment-laden water directly into the back of the catch basin.” Yet, “Contractors are required to clean the water before pumping it into the catch basin.”
What’s happening is pretty straightforward. The contractors for this project are obviously trying to cut corners at the public’s expense. Yet, the DNT conservative crowd still rushes to their defense, trying to sweep the whole issue under the rug. I swear, you people would support the construction of the Death Star if it meant bringing a few dozen jobs to the area.

You are using the contradiction argument, which doesn’t refute my main point at all.

You know,,, I think the DNT is losing their minds to make a story out of this.
And the general public in your area seems to be not to far behind.
Not only does it bad mouth the contractors, it also bad mouthes Walgreen’s.
There is more pollution coming out of China, just from their citizens ‘passing gas’ (sulfur)
in one day than we as a nation pollute in a week !!!

Crib how is it bad mouthing a contractor to simply report their actions? Also, when I read this story I Don’t attach too much blame to Walgreen’s except they should be a little embarrassed it took someone hiking Chester to report what was going on right under their noses.

Crib: Just so you know, I’m not “local”. In fact, far from it so let’s get that straight before I even begin… What China is and isn’t doing has no bearing on this story. Two wrongs don’t make a right is a basic moral tenet I learnt way back in my childhood – and that was a long time ago. I don’t how big a story this is and I don’t hold the journalism of the DNT any higher than my myopic vision can reach but your comment is no less ignorant than the ones you castigated.

You know I just got back from a loop around Ole Chester and I think I figured out the best part of this story; somebody was out there the other day paying enough attention that they noticed the cloudy water and then they busted the suckers! Sweet! Thanks whoever you are. YOU ARE A HERO!!!!!!!
Funny because I was out there with my girlfriend the other day looking over a bridge and commented that this must be the time of year when the water is the clearest…

Pumping muddy water into a storm sewer was probably a really dumb mistake by an underling on the contractor crew. I’m glad it was reported, investigated, and stopped. If the contractor deserves a fine, then by all means give him one. But honestly, this story isn’t that big of a deal. Must have been a slow news day.

Yeah not a big story for everybody, but if you lived where I do and spent as much time as I do in Chester you might feel differently.

Yes they are, racer, and I sure wouldn’t want them in my tapwater or groundwater!
And, who knows how much phosphate is in the ‘muddy water’? Most of the lakes here are so full of fertilizer that the weeds choke out the fishing.
A few years ago, the Osakis lake thing spent who knows how many gov’t dollars in a failed attempt to neutralize the amount of phosphates in lake Osakis. Total failure, and they even managed to kill off a whole bayfull of fish!

First, how many dead trout were found? How much sediment is churned up as an angler walks up stream fishing? How much is naturally leaked into this stream during storms?

Gee, the right wingers must teach that two wrongs make a right thingy early on to embed it.
