This is different – a Democrat trying to save the tax payer money and a Republican saying we need to spend even more money we don’t have. Both of these people need to wake up. The I-35W bridge cost $234M to replace (and that was on an accelerated timeline.) The Wakota bridge took 8 years with many delays and it cost around $300M The reason this bridge has sky-rocketed in price is because everybody wants their piece of cake and frosting to go with it. We can’t have just a new bridge, we need to have parks, walking and bike paths, and whatever else can be dreamed up to go with it. We can’t just tear down the old bridge – we have to fix it better than it is now just so people can walk on it. We need to have the new bridge 100+ feet above the water, but still keep the old one operating so boats can still get through. These people are crazy. But what’s really disappointing is reading how even a Minnesota Democrat is more conservative than a St. Croix county Republican.

All right – if you want a bridge so bad, figure out a way to get ‘er done for $200M. (I think even that amount is overly generous given this economy.) If you can’t figure out how to build a replacement bridge with that kind of money – then live with what you’ve got. And to those who believe the current bridge is unsafe – you can either drive around on the I-94 bridge, hop a freight train or take a canoe – I really don’t care. Just quite wasting me, my children’s and my grand-children’s money. By comparison, a $700M bridge is even goofier than the $900M Viking wanna-have dreamland.
