Minnesota Power looks at less coal
November 20, 2011 at 6:00 pm in Duluth News Tribune
Even as Minnesota Power plunges headlong toward making more electricity from hydroelectric dams and wind turbines, the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission is asking for much more from the Duluth-based utility, including a study on how to shut down two of its coal-burning power plants while at the same time adding cleaner natural gas.

Since moving to Duluth last year I have been impressed with the positive image that MN Power has within the community. And having a demand schedule that is so closely linked to the ‘heavy metal’ economy is a tough chore for any utility to stay nimble enough to react to.
This appears to be an opportunity for a long range plan that takes a realistic evaluation of the continued cost of coal as a fuel and the impacts of relying on it too much.
But energy generation of the future can go well beyond natural gas and biomass. There are many ways to incorporate distributed generation into the baseload mix that will put more folks to work in MN. The utility company of tomorrow has the opportunity to serve its customers by not only providing reasonable energy, but by also being a catalyst for economic growth. There are plenty of models out there to study. MN Power can help make Minnesota a very sustainable place to do business, and that will help everyone.

MP&L – My advise is to use the most cost effective fuel available. I trust you guys know what that is better than the Governor, or any state representative.
We need abundant electricity at the lowest possible price.

MP&L wimped out. People had better get ready for electric rates at least double what they are now. If you are a customer, better go to the board meetings or annual meeting to register your concerns.
