Journalist Bob Woodward speaks in Fargo

Hits a who’s who of Washington Watergate happened almost 40 years ago, but the indignation is fresh in Bob Woodward’s voice when he talks about the American president he helped bring down.
“It’s appalling what went on in the Nixon White House,” Woodward said Thursday, speaking before a crowd of more than 700 people at an event hosted by the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber. Continue Reading

Yeah, and Obama has the most transparent WH in history? LOL. He makes Nixon look like an open book.

I would have loved to have seen him. The most dangerous problem facing the country today: a secretive government. I could not agree more.
I disagree with Solon the Great over its genesis. Obama is too wet behind the ears to have caused much damage. Most of his shenanigans are simply politics as usual. Nothing new or earth shattering.
If you want to get a handle on the true abuses of executive power it is found in the post 9/11 Patriot Act. What a misnomer. That piece of legislation, conceived & harbored by successive administrations from Bush I to Clinton to “W,” did more to endanger a free democracy since the suspension of Haebius Corpus during the Civil War.
I submitted an editorial a while back that was roundly panned. In it I argued that if WikiLeaks did not exist the Federal Government would have to invent it. Far from releasing potentially dangerous correspondence regarding troop movements & the like, WikiLeaks has simply shown once again that official government pronouncements cannot be trusted.
During Vietnam Daniel Elseberg was vilified as a traitor. The cold eyes of history have proved quite the opposite. Far from endangering American lives, the Pentagon Papers showed the American public that the President & his top advisors knew the war was unwinable & in some ways led to its early termination: saving American lives.
The United States is a country based on the proposition that the government is to be respected, but never under any circumstances trusted. Watergate, the Pentagon Papers, Iran Contra, Zipper-Gate, & WikiLeaks all prove the veracity of this belief.
Every attempt by the government to shield its activities must be met by a robust effort of the citizenry to thwart it.
