There is a chasm developing among this state’s largest football programs, as schools with the highest enrollments begin pulling away from the rest of the state in correlating terms of enrollment and success.

Think of how many students at Washington do not get a chance to play at football. Wouldn’t a better idea be to say that for every 5oo students, you must field a team. This would mean SFW would have to come up with 3 teams. That would solve their league problems, decrease their travel problems, level the playing field and give more kids an opportunity. They could select the teams by random as the ESD schools basically due by birth, or they could have 3 head coaches that select their team on a rotation basis or stay with the team they went to middle school or collective grade schools with based on region. I hate to think Mitchell would not be able to compete at the highest possible level in SD. Coach V and his kids did a fabulous job and accomplished much more important things regarding life than increasing their chances to go to the dome ever could. Hats off to them. This talk cheapens what they accomplished with this Hoosier type tale. Last.y, we should consider that the sioux falls players have access to better coaching in the offseason than many kids get during the season through Avera and Sanford Power program. We do a lot with baseball in the offseason at these centers and see the WSHS offensive line, receivers, qb, linebackers etc all working out with Jessie Haines a semi-pro football player from our area doing workouts and drills specific to their position in a fabulous indoor bubble. Not to take away from what Coach V does at 6 in the morning but these facilities continue to give all the SF and Brandon schools and soon to be Harrisburg a big advantage. We could do a lot in Mitchell by supporting plans to offer our kids similar facilities to promote athletic excellence and general wellness to all our citizens by such a facility. It would do much more for more people than what we have gotten out of our outdoor pool as an example. We still need the pool but it just proves we could do more as a city, university, hospital and city if we put our minds to it.
