Governor Scott Walker tells a crowd in Green Bay he is hearing from frustrated employers who say they are finding unemployed workers who would rather collect benefits than get a job.

This is journalism? The governor held a closed conference and said that “employers are finding unemployed workers who would rather collect benefits” Which employers are saying this? If they are offering jobs to people, then there is a document trail. Refusing a job offer would terminate ones eligibility to receive unemployment benefits.
Come on, RFJ, did a little deeper before we just repeat what was said.

The RFJ did not write the article. They likely grabbed it off a statewide news service, just as they do for most articles that on close to the bottom of the page.

I am employer and that is absolutely true. Many (Not all) don’t want to work and would rather sit at home and collect there money. If you you go the state job boards and look at candidates for jobs and they will have salary requirements that are outrageous or other things in their profile that make them undesirable. Or they just apply for jobs that they know they are way overqualified for or have no chance of getting just to show the state that they applied for their two jobs that week. The best way to cut this unemploment rate is too cut off the money and force people back into the workforce.

Chris,
As an employer, do you log on and look at candidates? I’m not an employer, but you’ve sparked my curiosity.
Having been on the hunt for a job, I recall being frustrated by postings that were no longer current. It was disheartening to see jobs that described my skill set, but were not really open. I wasted a lot of time searching in my old field, because I thought that with so many postings my chances were good. I always wondered how those well known job search services could be so inaccurate.

Mike,
I am speaking of the Wisconsin Job board which is run by the Department of Workforce Development. When I have been looking for people we have used that board to see if any candidates were available. Many candidates will have salary requirements that far outweigh their experience and education level, from an employers perspective it is extemely frustrating and becomes a waste of time. We have found we find the best people from refferals from current employees and people we do business with. Networking in a job search is definetly the best way to go. Good luck in your search!
