Spirit Lake ‘major announcement’ planned Tuesday about Sioux nickname preservation
October 31, 2011 at 5:35 am in Grand Forks Herald
The Spirit Lake Nation, through its Tribal Council and the Committee for Understanding and Respect, announced plans today for a “major” announcement Tuesday regarding their efforts to preserve the use of UND’s Fighting Sioux name and logo. Continue Reading

Why doesn’t Spirit Lake and Standing Rock get it together come to a agreement with the state and UND and the NCAA to keep the Fight Sioux name. The State and UND allow them to build a casino next to the Ralph and they sanction the Fighting Sioux for passage. The Native American groups profit from the casino and UND from the Fighting Sioux and all the games brought into town.
A business partnership

The problem at Standing Rock is the 12 members of the tribal council are speaking for all members of the tribe without allowing them to vote on the issue.

How can you people give it a “thumbs down?” It’s a fact.

The Standing Rock have had 2 tribal elections since this issue started. They could have elected a ‘keep the name’ council but did not. I think that was allowing the people to vote.

Voting for tribal council members and voting Yes/No on the nickname issue are are completely different and should be not even be condisdered the same. How hard would have it been for the council to put the question on the ballot? IMO … they were afraid the majority would have voiced their opinion in favor of keeping the logo/ nickname!

We the people of North Dakota didn’t get to vote on the nickname, so how is the law valid? So your point doesn’t make any sense. The majority of ND people don’t want the nickname law, it was only a few alumni, mostly out of state and a Delta pilot who supported the nickname law.
Give the people of ND a voice or don’t we matter? It’s our taxpayer money that is supporting this stupid law.

Puckster: using your logic, no piece of legislation could ever be valid unless it’s endorsed by a direct vote of the people whether at the state of national level. And no, it’s not different than other types of issues that come before legislative bodies. I believe you are misunderstanding representative forms of government.

“Bury me….bury me…” final words of a woman’s head kept alive, in a box, by scientific means. The Frozen Dead, the movie. Also known as The Brain That Wouldn’t Die (1967 with Dana Andrews).
I’ve said before and I’ll say again, this dispute will be around for years before it’s settled. If it’s not one thing it’s another. There will be no easy end to this, as we all know from the last many years.

You know what else will… all of us… because 2012 is next year!!!!!
Aside from that obvious fact, im glad Spirit Lake is standing up for what’s right and not letting the NC$$ and the PC white’s push them around like they are trying to do.

Exactly, if we lose the Big Sky then this very fight will kill UND in the end. I think 3 years was enough and now it is time to put egos aside to do what is RIGHT for the university.
Keep the fight going and you will get to play plenty of NAIA teams in the future; people are already mad about the scheduling during the transition and it will only get worse.
I can easily attend and cheer for other division 1 universities down here as I have options. Keep going this route and your only option will be cheer to for NDSU or cheer for UND against Montana Western and Sioux Falls. Might as well change the name to the University of Grand Forks.

eh….big deal-who needs the Big Sky- just think of the money saved going back to D-2 football……almost zero travel- Crookston, U of Mary, moorhead state, duluth- maybe they can talk the whole DAC into coming in….hardly have to leave the state for a game.

Alcorn State has played in the SWAC since 1962, an athletic conference made up of historically black universites which decline NCAA playoff bids much like the Ivy League.
Thus, changing their name has no bearing on their conference affiliation or playoff chances.

My guess is that they are going to file suit against UND, the University System, the State of North Dakota, the Big Sky Conference, the NCAA, Godfather’s Pizza and the Easter Bunny.

I’ve metioned this before, but i’ll say it again; change the name to UND Spirit Lake Sioux. honor the group that considers the name an honor, while retiring the reference the old nickname has to Standing Rock. everybody wins. is that so hard?

I could completely agree with that.. Make it the UND Spirit Lake Fighting Sioux and all would be good in my book.

I doubt that anything new can be said about the nickname issue. This announcement of an upcoming announcement reads like a bad Geraldo script. Seriously, though, any threat, no matter how empty or baseless, could distract and derail a number of ND legislators. We all saw how 1,000 e-mails contaminated the last vote. I figured this was almost over. Now I’m not so sure.

First off, the NCAA is an awful organization. I’ve always thought the name ought to be retired because it’s simply wrong to try to represent yourself with the name and image of another culture. Especially when the taking culture already decimated the other. Second, if the name was a gift, it’s UND’s to use it however they wish. To keep it or not. Third, I wish all the supporters, native or not, would pool their resources and use them to actually educate the youth (and adults) of ND about real native issues and history. Instead of trying to claim a nickname/logo is the last hope to educating the public about your culture.

Logan: It’s so rare to read a comment that actually speaks to the original issue. It’s kind of
refreshing. The most vocal are blaming the NCAA for this controversy. The quietest are
thanking them. I’m not sure about the NCAA. They probably do lots of good things, but it
really is a money machine. They’ll get 70% of a $100,000 gate if NDSU hosts a playoff football game (I’ve heard). How is that fair? The big announcement from Spirit Lake is tomorrow. Here we go!

Here it is: http://savethefightingsioux.com/ Until the SL Council receives the support of the SR Council, the words of SL are twisted! SL should send it’s demands, and address its press conference, to Mr Charles Murphy.

Based on the two-page summary of the Spirit Lake lawsuit, it’s satire worthy of The Onion. Nicely done tribe and Mr. Soderstrom. We can all use a little more humor in our lvies.
