I visit Des Moines, IA a lot, and I’ve been to their farmer’s market a few times. They actually take up several city blocks, and put up their tents on the blacktop. It is insanely popular there, and I think part of the popularity comes from them shutting down a section of town to host it. I’d suggest going forward with the idea of hosting the farmer’s market on main street, or a offshoot from it.
