Wow! Robert Kelley to the Rescue.

Seriously? This is the best President Kelly can do with his time? Give me a freakin’ break. It wasn’t like putting her on the big screen an average of once per game really took that much time away from other fans and students. Lighten up people. You can take away the beer lady, but if future studies show UND has a high rate of binge drinking, what are you going to blame it on then? I can’ t believe some of these morons actually have college degrees.

Turns out Kelly made a casual comment about this a year and a half ago. This story is being driven by REA staff according to today’s paper. What you are seeing here is the start of a smear campaign that has had the expected results. A casual converstation that Hodgson now says was not a directive by Kelly has been dredged up to be used as a wedge issue by REA staff to further stir the Sioux logo pot and anti-Kelly sentiment. And everybody is buying.

Beer grandma is adorable and obviously not promoting underage drinking. This is a complete overreaction.

I don’t know, I started drinking because I saw old women at sports events drinking. It sure left an impression on me, and now my family is suffering because of that old woman.

By the time Kelley is done UND will be the school no one wants to attend.
Well-loved. Like or Dislike: 149 37
Couldn’t agree more, tj. Kelley is quite possibly the worst thing that’s ever happened to UND. It’s a shame.
Well-loved. Like or Dislike: 137 37
Well, I’m glad that Kelly doesn’t have anything more important to focus on these days. Things must be going so well for him!

! Can only laugh at the sitght of adults, charged with running a multi billion-dollar institution, sitting at a conference table & Mrs. Delano not being on the jumbofron, is the solution to a “major” UND problem. Then again, why should that be a surprise with this group?
Well-loved. Like or Dislike: 125 18
Maybe now the cameras will catch some of the students that sneak in their own bottles.
Well-loved. Like or Dislike: 99 8
UND’s bad rep. comes from the fact that there are probably 100 or more off campus bars where underage drinking takes place. The developers are in bed with the liquor stores to keep the boos sales up by allowing residential housing to be in effect unlicensed bars. How can studying get done when there is a party on every corner with no ID needed.

The cameras should just set up at Judy’s Bar. That’s where all the underage sioux hockey players drink.
Hot debate. What do you think? 63 65
Now that pres Kelley has been successful of ridding UND of beautiful logo and proud name, maybe now he is setting his sights on the beer drinkers of our fair community. This is 1 way to surely get run out of town. Wait a minute, wish he would have thought of this 3 years ago.
Well-loved. Like or Dislike: 94 25
UND should be less concerned about the Beer Lady and more concerned about the negative image that comes from Brian Faison’s hair.
Well-loved. Like or Dislike: 97 17
UND’s reputation as a party school as one of its selling points has been well known for a long time. For years administrators refused to study the problem of binge drinking there despite the fact they knew it was rampant

A) I’m pretty sure ignorant and inbred North Dakotans do more to sully the reputation of UND than President Kelly ever could.
B) The people complaining about drinking in off-campus housing have obviously never been to another major college campus in the USA.
C) It’s North Dakota. What the hell else is there to do?
Poorly-rated. Like or Dislike: 34 87
No one said other campuses don’t drink but here we encourage it by only recently putting a lid on a whole houses over occupied by students. The UND neighborhoods used to be family dominated with students living in just the basements helping families supplement their incomes. Now the only income supplements go to the slumlords that have taken over ownership of those neighborhoods and the liquor stores that cater to underage drinking.
Poorly-rated. Like or Dislike: 22 53
Seriously? Have you ever been to any other major American university?
Hot debate. What do you think? 30 16
UND isn’t exactly a major American Univ. The housing stock isn’t as old as it is in older, larger campus towns & so the neighborhoods have been decimated a long time ago by slumlords. At any rate there is a cozy relationship here between developers & the liquor stores. The Univ. looks the other way as bars & off sale establishments fleece students of their student loans every Fall. Why don’t we just do like the Univ. of Manitoba and allow 18 yr. olds to drink on campus. As it stands we allow slum lords to get rich off their houses crammed with underage students who are then able to abuse their neighborhoods.
Poorly-rated. Like or Dislike: 16 34
In my neighborhood, most houses have been bought up and converted to student rentals. The number of empties on my lawn Saturday and Sunday mornings bears that out. But it’s not just the houses, spearman. My bet is that if they were to raid the dorms the inventory of liquor confiscated would rival that of Happy Harry’s. Fact is, administrators know that drinking attracts students to UND. If they enforced the prohibition and established a take no prisoners approach, and got the reputation of a BYU, they know enrollment would dry up, and all that tuition money they so covet would go away.
Well-loved. Like or Dislike: 32 12
Spearman, what would you classify as a major America University? Personally, I would consider any University with a population of 10,000 + as a major one. Think about it this way: UND is larger than Notre Dame. If UND isn’t a major University, then Notre Dame isn’t either. A majority of people would argue this.
Also, to lower the drinking age to 18 would violate Federal law. That would be a big mistake for North Dakota.
Also, you really must have never been to the campus’s of any other college of this magnitude. NDSU is just as “bad”, if not “worse”, when it comes to partying/ drinking. SDSU and St. Cloud State is the same way. I see no major issue here with students living in off-campus housing…
Well-loved. Like or Dislike: 25 5
Thank god for the “PC” Police at UND, I feel safer and more secure already! Seriously, want to change the image? Get some folks with a spine who’ll stand up for the majority! UND is starting to remind me of the movie PCU.
Well-loved. Like or Dislike: 82 13
So that makes Mankato State & St. Cloud State major American Universities since both have student enrollments of 17,000. There are junior colleges with enrollments of 30-50,000 in Calif.
So just because they all do it in your view there is no major issue in GF/UND with drinking in off-campus housing when the deck is stacked against families trying to buy near campus houses.
Poorly-rated. Like or Dislike: 5 23
Clearly enrollment is not the only factor, I was just pointing something out. Mankato-State and St. Cloud State are not division 1 and they are not flagship or landgrant institutions..
ANYWAY, if families do not like how students live in houses near their own friggin campus, then maybe they should not move there… Duh? That would be like me moving to a trailer park and demanding the current residents to leave because their trailers deteriorate my property value. For stupid. Grand Forks is not too big. People can live on the outskirts of town and still get to UND in less than 10 minutes…
Like or Dislike: 3 2
UND just became D-1 in sports other than hockey & not in football. There are people who have been living in the same house in UND neighborhoods for at least 64 yrs. How ridiculous that you think they should move if the slum lords have bought up too many houses and stuffed them with students who are then allowed by authorities to operate as underage bars without a liquor license. Your logic is half baked on both issues.
Like or Dislike: 1 4
REJ, IOW , many families were there long before the students occupied whole houses. As I said before, in the 1940s thru the 70s any students in the neighborhoods were living with families in their basements providing supplemental income for those families. Eventually slum lords saw an opp., excuse the pun, and outbid families for homes up for sale. Using your logic students shouldn’t have moved in to those previously family occupied homes if they didn’t want to have to put up with being hassled for loud parties, right?
Like or Dislike: 4 3
The onus should be shared by the UND administration who, in their alacrity to generate greater revenue streams, jacked-up enrollment, even though they knew the university didn’t have enough dormitory facilities to handle the increase. Landlords simply exploited that situation.

Just one more reason for me to hate Kelley.
Well-loved. Like or Dislike: 70 22
It’s about time they admitted the Ralph has a drinking problem. Nothing like seeing tons of slobbering goobers all jacked up on booze to terrorize visiting fans.
Poorly-rated. Like or Dislike: 21 55
This is counterproductive in the long run. When you can’t show a legal adult consuming a legal beverage in a responsible manner, then the “typical drinking” that people observe is the irresponsible drinking, and think that is the only way to drink.
As the parent of a college student, I think the whole “keep it out of sight” is wrong.
Well-loved. Like or Dislike: 70 2
Showing the picture, however innocent just adds to the supposed myth that the Ralph is a family atmosphere. As I stated earlier, the arena is unfortunately full of slobbering drunks. Yes, the minority ruin it for the majority but when the majority fail to keep those slobbing drunks under control it ruins the whole idea of one enjoying themselves at a sporting event there. I’m not sure what phrase the announcers use to say how nice the fans are but if you are ever there as an opposing team fan you get the full force of unruly drunk jerks that have no clue what sportsmanship or class is, PERIOD. Ok, here come the Gopher hater comments. The whole statement is accurate 100% and you cannot deny it.

Kelley’s solution, just like the Fighting Sioux symbol, if it goes away, it doesn’t exist. Fire this clown.
We are the Fighting Sioux and college students will drink.

POOR KELLY…..NO SENSE OF HUMOR….NO AFFECTION FOR OUR NORTH DAKOTA LOVE. Never trust anyone that will put a grandma or lady down for such a thing as having a little fun. I say KEEP THE BEER LADY! Mrs. Delano has been around a lot longer than Kelly….and probably will be here after he moves on to his next position. Maybe it would help Kelly if he read “How to Talk Minnesotan” It might give him some insight to our upper Midwest sense of humor.
Well-loved. Like or Dislike: 59 8
How about a little common sense – this is the media helping to make a mountain out of a mole hill. There has been, is and always will be alcohol on college campuses, there will be underage students who find a way to drink. I am quite confident that Kelly did not spend an inordinate amount of time on this issue. If it doesn’t make the paper no one would have noticed.
Hot debate. What do you think? 27 16
I don’t have a problem with finding doing something other than drinking at a game to put on the big screen. My question: why publicize it? A simple email that said, no more pictures of people drinking on the jumbo-tron and “presto” problem addressed and on to the next item of business.
North Dakota nice, North Dakota fat (no one EVER said North Dakotans were malnourished), and North Dakota drunks … like the slate gray sky that blocks the sun for three months at a time, and temperatures so cold chemical reactions stop (Ever wonder why they use sand instead of salt on the roads? it is not because they are worried about the finish on your car.) these are simply a part of ND culture. Some are good: ND nice, and some could probably do with a little work (fat drunks).
It is simply part of what makes ND ND.

ND nice? Only as long as your family comes from ND and you are a good white Lutheran/Catholic.

Gee Flying nurse, Manitoba is colder than ND last time I checked. Remember Archie Bunker lives in Queens. North Dakota culture is pretty advanced considering all those farmers travel more and follow world events more than most places.
Well-loved. Like or Dislike: 19 2
Spearman: I never said we were not advanced or uncultured, just nice, fat, and unfortunately drink too much. Since those statements are inflammatory, let me support them. 27% of North Dakotans are obese as defined by the CDC and “According to Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in their 2002-2003 “National Surveys on Drug Use and Health,” North Dakota had the highest rate (10.8%) of alcohol dependence or alcohol abuse during the survey year while Tennessee had the lowest rate (6.0 %). North Dakota also had the highest rate (31.4%) in the nation for “binge alcohol use” by persons who were 12 years old or older.”
I am an ass, I admit it, but my inflammatory statements are based on fact.

North Dakotans travel more and follow world events? In what alternate universe? Unless you count the Mall of America as “long distance” travel.

The best way to show kelly we dislike him is send him an email and tell him how he is doing his email is firstname.lastname@example.org or comment on one of his plans to make UND “exceptional” here http://und.edu/president/statements/oea-statement.cfm

I’m struggling with this decision. How ridiculous! Highlighting Mrs. Delano as the “Beer Lady” was just fun. I hate to see the day when there are no traditions at the Ralph.

Time for a public outcry for President Kelley’s retirement. Buying him out would be way less costly to the university as well as being able to keep UND’s traditions!!!

Kelley is part of the 1% anti-nickname crowd. Time for the 99% to take action!

I can’t think of one positive thing that Kelley has done for UND. Who the hell hired this idiot? He needs to go now before he does any further damage to the school.
Well-loved. Like or Dislike: 17 1
Next thing to go will be the Kiss Cam because it will promote promiscuity among the college students. Then it will be video cameras in all the dorm rooms because Kelley knows that those college students just can’t be trusted…..
Well-loved. Like or Dislike: 24 2
Then banning of cell phones because they could cause cancer and UND does not promote cancer. Then no talking in public because UND wants to be known for Academics and not Social activities. Cars will soon be outlawed because they cause pollution and UND does not promote pollution.
Well-loved. Like or Dislike: 20 3
They can’t outlaw cars. Kupchella’s $18 million white elephant parking ramp needs the cash from permits to pay it off. Maybe in 20 years.

Whoa, the PCPers are hard at work here. That is the “politically correct professors”. The Herald’s front page also included a beer coming into Grand Forks called “Wood Chippers”. Why not now call it Beth Beer named after Beth Delano the “Beer Grandma”? Come on, Kelly, we ain’t in Mormon Utah.
