Seriously? This is the best President Kelly can do with his time? Give me a freakin’ break. It wasn’t like putting her on the big screen an average of once per game really took that much time away from other fans and students. Lighten up people. You can take away the beer lady, but if future studies show UND has a high rate of binge drinking, what are you going to blame it on then? I can’ t believe some of these morons actually have college degrees.

Beer grandma is adorable and obviously not promoting underage drinking. This is a complete overreaction.

I don’t know, I started drinking because I saw old women at sports events drinking. It sure left an impression on me, and now my family is suffering because of that old woman.

By the time Kelley is done UND will be the school no one wants to attend.

Couldn’t agree more, tj. Kelley is quite possibly the worst thing that’s ever happened to UND. It’s a shame.

Well, I’m glad that Kelly doesn’t have anything more important to focus on these days. Things must be going so well for him!

! Can only laugh at the sitght of adults, charged with running a multi billion-dollar institution, sitting at a conference table & Mrs. Delano not being on the jumbofron, is the solution to a “major” UND problem. Then again, why should that be a surprise with this group?

The cameras should just set up at Judy’s Bar. That’s where all the underage sioux hockey players drink.

Now that pres Kelley has been successful of ridding UND of beautiful logo and proud name, maybe now he is setting his sights on the beer drinkers of our fair community. This is 1 way to surely get run out of town. Wait a minute, wish he would have thought of this 3 years ago.

UND should be less concerned about the Beer Lady and more concerned about the negative image that comes from Brian Faison’s hair.

UND’s reputation as a party school as one of its selling points has been well known for a long time. For years administrators refused to study the problem of binge drinking there despite the fact they knew it was rampant

In my neighborhood, most houses have been bought up and converted to student rentals. The number of empties on my lawn Saturday and Sunday mornings bears that out. But it’s not just the houses, spearman. My bet is that if they were to raid the dorms the inventory of liquor confiscated would rival that of Happy Harry’s. Fact is, administrators know that drinking attracts students to UND. If they enforced the prohibition and established a take no prisoners approach, and got the reputation of a BYU, they know enrollment would dry up, and all that tuition money they so covet would go away.

Spearman, what would you classify as a major America University? Personally, I would consider any University with a population of 10,000 + as a major one. Think about it this way: UND is larger than Notre Dame. If UND isn’t a major University, then Notre Dame isn’t either. A majority of people would argue this.
Also, to lower the drinking age to 18 would violate Federal law. That would be a big mistake for North Dakota.
Also, you really must have never been to the campus’s of any other college of this magnitude. NDSU is just as “bad”, if not “worse”, when it comes to partying/ drinking. SDSU and St. Cloud State is the same way. I see no major issue here with students living in off-campus housing…

Thank god for the “PC” Police at UND, I feel safer and more secure already! Seriously, want to change the image? Get some folks with a spine who’ll stand up for the majority! UND is starting to remind me of the movie PCU.

Clearly enrollment is not the only factor, I was just pointing something out. Mankato-State and St. Cloud State are not division 1 and they are not flagship or landgrant institutions..
ANYWAY, if families do not like how students live in houses near their own friggin campus, then maybe they should not move there… Duh? That would be like me moving to a trailer park and demanding the current residents to leave because their trailers deteriorate my property value. For stupid. Grand Forks is not too big. People can live on the outskirts of town and still get to UND in less than 10 minutes…

UND just became D-1 in sports other than hockey & not in football. There are people who have been living in the same house in UND neighborhoods for at least 64 yrs. How ridiculous that you think they should move if the slum lords have bought up too many houses and stuffed them with students who are then allowed by authorities to operate as underage bars without a liquor license. Your logic is half baked on both issues.

REJ, IOW , many families were there long before the students occupied whole houses. As I said before, in the 1940s thru the 70s any students in the neighborhoods were living with families in their basements providing supplemental income for those families. Eventually slum lords saw an opp., excuse the pun, and outbid families for homes up for sale. Using your logic students shouldn’t have moved in to those previously family occupied homes if they didn’t want to have to put up with being hassled for loud parties, right?

The onus should be shared by the UND administration who, in their alacrity to generate greater revenue streams, jacked-up enrollment, even though they knew the university didn’t have enough dormitory facilities to handle the increase. Landlords simply exploited that situation.

This is counterproductive in the long run. When you can’t show a legal adult consuming a legal beverage in a responsible manner, then the “typical drinking” that people observe is the irresponsible drinking, and think that is the only way to drink.
As the parent of a college student, I think the whole “keep it out of sight” is wrong.

POOR KELLY…..NO SENSE OF HUMOR….NO AFFECTION FOR OUR NORTH DAKOTA LOVE. Never trust anyone that will put a grandma or lady down for such a thing as having a little fun. I say KEEP THE BEER LADY! Mrs. Delano has been around a lot longer than Kelly….and probably will be here after he moves on to his next position. Maybe it would help Kelly if he read “How to Talk Minnesotan” It might give him some insight to our upper Midwest sense of humor.

How about a little common sense – this is the media helping to make a mountain out of a mole hill. There has been, is and always will be alcohol on college campuses, there will be underage students who find a way to drink. I am quite confident that Kelly did not spend an inordinate amount of time on this issue. If it doesn’t make the paper no one would have noticed.

Gee Flying nurse, Manitoba is colder than ND last time I checked. Remember Archie Bunker lives in Queens. North Dakota culture is pretty advanced considering all those farmers travel more and follow world events more than most places.

The best way to show kelly we dislike him is send him an email and tell him how he is doing his email is robert.kelley@email.und.edu or comment on one of his plans to make UND “exceptional” here http://und.edu/president/statements/oea-statement.cfm

Then banning of cell phones because they could cause cancer and UND does not promote cancer. Then no talking in public because UND wants to be known for Academics and not Social activities. Cars will soon be outlawed because they cause pollution and UND does not promote pollution.
