Every since Charlie Johnson left, KVLY has sunk to an all time low. KVLY use to have an outstanding staff: Matt, Becca, Scott, Brian, Eric, Barbara, Wade, Steve, Darin, Chris, Trish, numerous reporters and producers, Pam & Jeff and now Robin! I can’t watch KVLY anymore. Who wants to watch anchors who can’t read and reporters who dress like they are still in college and mumble.

I agree the local news has slipped a long way down. But remember too that its just a sign of the changing times. There simply is not the revenue draw there used to be with any local media whether local TV or newspaper. With the arrival of the internet and the ability to choose how we gather our own news the local media is quickly becoming a thing of the past. The decision makers in Dallas have no intimate connection with Fargo nor do they care about the past history of our local area. The owners of KVLY/KXJB simply have their own best interest in mind, and that is all business. To them filling the airtime while bringing cost down to a minimum is all that matters.
Sorry to be blunt but I think Robin was fortunate to be able to do what she was doing as long as she did. The way her tenure ended was not so much based on her talent or age as much as it was on the local market not being able to support so many media salaries. If it wasn’t for the Forum being locally owned and operated with so many smaller newspapers gathering revenues we would have seen much of the same happening within the WDAY station as well. Local television media is expensive especially with the changing technology demanding constant high tech visuals to keep the fewer viewers they support. I am surprised that KVLY is still able to run and function quite frankly. What we are seeing with all the local cuts with on-air personality’s making quick exits is just the easiest way for the owners to try and make profits in a business environment that has created razer thin profit margins. This wont be the last of the cuts by far. In fact I don’t see local television even being viable in the next 10 years. I know I haven’t tuned into any local news to follow events in many years, I have a strong suspicion I’m not alone . . .
