Helllooooo…. Where are all the usual characters on this one? Don’t want to comment on the fact that pollution kills people, hmm? I guess that can just be disregarded as more liberal propaganda, eh?

For correction – that isn’t “smoke” coming out of the stacks. It’s the steam that results when high temperature air from a pellet furnace goes through a wet scrubber that removes particulates by mixing the air with water at high velocities. Also, there are a lot of other factors other than taconite plants such as homes and businesses that contain asbestos in flooring, ceiling tiles, HVAC systems, etc. So yes Merv, I DO want to comment, mostly that your comment makes you appear uneducated on the topic considering that the study has not indicated that mining is the sole cause of mesothelioma. And that’s coming from a liberal, so don’t include me in your grouping please.

They are looking for ex miners who died of this disease and then comparing that group to the population as a whole to see if there was a higher incidence of mesothelioma…and so far the research has shown a higher incidence. Also I’m going to point out that some of what you see may be steam but some also is smoke and both can contain pollution. I hope this does not become a tiresome liberal vs. conservative quarrel. But rather government doing what it was intended to do which is look out for the best interest of its people. If people are facing an unknown workplace hazard this should be researched in order to correct that hazard.
