Fast-food barbecue restaurant could compete with Famous Dave’s in Duluth
October 9, 2011 at 7:00 pm in Duluth News Tribune
Texas-based Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, the fastest growing barbecue restaurant chain in the country, is coming to Duluth. If a Canal Park site is chosen, it could pit Dickey’s against Famous Dave’s Bar-B-Que, already in Canal Park.

Why don’t any of these new restaurants grab a new concept and stay away from their competition? If it were up to me, I’d look at somewhere such as London Road (A lot of traffic there) as there really are NO cheaper family rest. down there any longer, except Perkins (ho hum) and Blackwoods (which isn’t cheap); or there is always Grand Avenue out in West Duluth, plenty o traffic there as well. I’m so tired of these restaurants that pick one of 2 spots, either canal park or up by the mall; it’s getting old already!
Hot debate. What do you think?

If you were risking your $ on opening a restaurant, where would you want to open it? Since Duluth’s economy is based solely on tourism dollars, you’d want to go where the tourists go. Canal Park. Then the Mall area because that serves the most traffic. It’s basic business / marketing 101 stuff. If you want to open a small corner cafe that caters more to locals, and you are not concerned about making any $, then by all means open up in a less traveled neighborhood. Many small local joints have been able to survive a long time doing that. But a national chain like Dickey’s isn’t going to be able to survive in an environment like that. (There’s a reason London Rd. restaurants continue to fail)

Mr. Dead, do you remember Arthur Treachers fish@chips, and Weiner King?

Oh my, yes! Arthur Treacher’s Fish & Chips was the BEST! And it had the perfect location right on central entrance. We went there a lot, probably once or maybe twice a week.

I really don’t know what anyone sees in Famous Daves anyway. I just wish that we would get a Tony Romas up here. Now that’s barbeque!

Now if only we would get a Chipotle. This town needs a good Burrito place!

It’s too bad if Buca di Beppo showed up people would whine about the prices. Now -that- is some good eating, unlike the Sysco Italiano from Olive Garden.

What? Buca is terrible. And besides it would be too expensive for Duluthians.

Dickey’s is excellent quality BBQ and priced reasonably. I love eating at their twin cities area spots.

Famous Daves is OKAY. Dickeys isn’t great.
Would be nice if a real restaurant would open up in Canal rather than another chain. The more chains you put in down there, the less unique it becomes, and it turns into a true tourist trap.
What is needed down there is one of kind or unique to duluth type restaurants. Duluth Brewing Company shows promise. Would be nice if something like what is going into Old City Hall could be done down there…a locally owned, unique, and locally ‘themed’ joint.
Seriously, who wants to go to the same old place they go to in the cities when they come up here on Vacation? The originality of Grandma’s and other places is/was a huge draw.

Duluth needs restaurants that take EBT

We have a Dickey’s in Coon Rapids, they do not have a liquor license. Not that alcohol is required but, if you are going out for dinner and drinks, it is not an option. I also would rather see a non chain restaurant. Something unique to northern Minnesota.

BUCCA IS A GREAT PLACE, AND NO MORE EXPENSIVE THAN ANY OF THE PALUCCI DUMPS!
