You mean it went nearly unnoticed by the media. The homestead tax did not go unnoticed by me, and every other homeowner is about to find out.
Thank the republicans for your tax increase. Dayton and Dems fought hard to increase taxes on the wealthy but in the end, the republicans won and 98% of the rest of us lost.
Hot debate. What do you think?

Tax increases are unpleasant, but the truth is, this credit has been simply rotten with fraud and cheating. I can think of at least 10 property owners that were getting homestead credit without being truly eligible under the rules. I was under the impression that the property tax rebate program was getting changed also. I hope so. Renters getting a big credit for property taxes isn’t necessary. From personal experience, I got half of my rent back when I lived in a certain downtown hotel made into apartments in Worthington back in the 90′s when the housing authority ran it. Not really fair considering the circumstances. Should a owner of a high value property get a break when their “claimed” income is low? Not hardly. If you can live in a high value place, then you can pay for it also! Property taxes need reform, and it will be painful at first. In the end, if those who have good properties pay their fair share and those of us who live in shacks pay our share it will all come out even. Unfortunately the vocal minority will cry and bellar and what a ruccuss they will make. Property taxes are a fair and equitable requirement of owning land, homes, businesses. Why would I say that? Because that is where the true wealth is!!!!!!!!!!!! And for so long many have managed to get out of paying. Do you own multiple homes/lake/vacation homes? You should pay plenty!!! Do you live in a shack and are barely getting by? You should not pay much!!! There is plenty of room for property tax reform and this is only a drop in a giant ocean.
