Broadway Medical Center in Alexandria and Sanford Health announced today that they have agreed to a letter of intent (LOI). This is non-binding first step in a potential merger. Continue Reading

This should set off an interesting referral war. Currently most referrals from Alexandria (Douglas County Hosp.) go to St Cloud or Twin CIties. I see an interesting geography statement in the announcement: “Alexandria is in central Minnesota along I-94 just over 100 miles east of Fargo, and 130 miles west of Minneapolis.” They seem to forget that the closest medical center is St Cloud which is much closer than Fargo. Wonder if Broadway patients will have any choice other than the mother ship in Fargo??

It’s unfortunate that people don’t think Douglas County Hospital is a “medical center”. We have a very large array of medical technologies available in our very community. I would encourage people in Alexandria & the surrounding areas to take the time to check into just what we have right in our own back yard. Everything from Radiation & Medical Oncology; cutting edge imaging services; outreach specialists; first class orthopedics; first class surgery center; not to mention the beautiful & technologically advanced patient rooms & Obstetrics unit that were recently completed, all of which are of the highest quality. Also it’s unfortunate that Broadway Medical Center is unwilling to band together with the existing facility located across their parking lot to further the cause of continuity of care for patients. I think sending patients 100 miles away to Fargo for procedures that we have available right here in Alexandria is poor patient care. Patients ALWAYS have the right to choose where they have their procedures done, they just need to ask. It is ALWAYS a patients right to choose & no responsible doctor should take that right away.
