What is in our water? A Lake Ida couple struggles with pollution-related problems

Don and Sharon Underhill live along the peaceful shores of Lake Ida.
But they cannot fish or swim in the waters fronting their property. Continue Reading

You know, there is something really, really wrong with Land and Resource in Douglas County when they won’t allow me to build a simple patio behind my house on Lake Ida, an effort that cost me $500 to deal with bureaucratic red tape and ended up being nothing more than a farscial kangaroo court denial, while at the same time we have fecal matter and E coli in Lake Ida and our well water.
I could dump chemicals on my lawn all summer long and be perfectly within the law. But I don’t do that, because I understand that it’s not good for the lake. Yet the county will not permit a couple hundred square feet of patio blocks behind my house that would run water off into a garden fifty feet from the shoreline and present no threat to the lake whatsoever.
Their priorities seem misplaced to me. It’s insanity.

I agree with Mr Dempsey – When making almost any attempt to improve property there is the Land & Resorce folks saying NO at every turn based on concerns for the enviornment etc. If every deck that they fight got built it would not come close to the impact of farm or lawn fertilizer. (If in fact there is any negative impact of putting a deck on a house.) Then they totally ignore the blatant sources of pollution. Typical government operation.

Why is it that I get the feeling that the persons who are supposed to be taking care of these kinds of problems, (Mr Rush), could really care less?

You shouldn’t attack a guy enforcing rules that you don’t agree with. Rather, you should complain about the rules themselves. L&R staff are just doing their jobs. I agree that many of the restrictions are ridiculous, but I don’t blame the staff.

I’m not attacking a guy enforcing the rules.
I’m complaining about a guy NOT enforcing what rules there are. Or, not trying to get the rules changed to do some good.
I’m sick of government paid people saying that their hands are tied, while doing nothing more than enough to protect their phony jobs.
Meanwhile, here we sit with the ‘precious lakes’ looking more like cesspools every year.
Anyone wonder why there’s so many ‘For Sale’ signs around the lakes?
